SYSTEM PANNIERS

Hi Chaps

Probably going to sound very thick but this is the best place to ask the question.
I have bought some used system panniers however I do not know what the correct procedure is to mount them on the bike and open them. Having read previously that bits can be broken I do not want to force anything and need to know that they are secure, can you open the panniers when they are mounted on the bike etc.

Trying to remember this from my head.

To mount them :
- make sure you have unlocked with key so that the handle is up (no need to undo the pannier itself)
- Hook the top part of the pannier over the rail and at same time make sure that the bottom of the pannier mounts onto the pillion peg securely.
- Close the handle and lock the pannier.

To unlock pannier whilst still on bike :
- unlock pannier using key, raise handle and then lift up the flat handle underneath the raised handle.

Be careful on both accounts that you do not force anything. If things do not open,close, raise etc easily then it is possibly because something is not undone or lined up correctly.

The key point (sorry) to remember is not to try to close the lever when the red metal plate is visible, otherwise there is a risk of bending it. It's easy to do this.............

If I can dig the reality up from the dregs of my brain, the red metal plate is an indicator that the panniers are not locked to the bike, hence it is important to be aware of it.

I could be wrong, but that's whats in there somewhere.

Thats right.. never try to open or close the panniers if there's any part of the 'red tab' visible... this can easily bend and break.. and then the panniers broken until you replace the bits.

The other thing to be aware of is the lower 'Lug' - you must ensure this is correctly connected to the fixing point on the frame.. if it isn't - the pannier is bound to fly off.

So.. in short. before you try to remove of fit the panniers.. turn the key until the red tab disappears. This is crucial.. and so easy to forget.

there are two 'locked' positions. with the carry handle up.. and down.

locked. note the red tab.

and unlocked.. the key has been turned so the red tab is hidden.
