The following seems to have worked

Download Malwarebytes to memory stick
Start PC in safe mode
Install Malwarebytes
Full scan
2 infected files found...both named adware or adaware (forgot to write name down)
Delete, then empty recycle bin

Restart

All fine so far:rolleyes:

If it reappears, repeat the above but turn off system restore first. :thumb2

Malware does the trick. I've wasted a fair few hours trying to sort this myself. You need to boot in safemode but once you are in you can scan and sort it quickly enough. Run a full scan when you are back up and running.

Up & running again

I started up as a guest account. Donwloaded Malwarebytes. Full scan & it found 61 infected files. Software removed all. Top stuff :thumb2 Thanks for this.

System tools appears to affect the current user profile only, at least that's what seems to happen with windows 7. Guest and other accounts work but you'll need to scan from the "infected" account to clean it. Probably easier with XP as I don't think its as restrictive.

What caused the infections? Opening emails or browsing porn:augie Or was it the usual cause 'I didn't do anything it just appeared from nowhere':D

I got this virus by following a link on here, daft thing is, I knew the link looked dodgy as I clicked on it. :blast
Malwarebytes cleared it. :thumb

I caught the same virus on saturday, from friends reunited.

Judge has just sorted me out :thumb

I got it last week on my PC - I was browsing a site looking for a way to play a .ppt file on my Mac - not looking at porn or anything dodgy. It got through Avast but flagged up a warning - but by the time I had reacted to it, it had disabled all my antivirus programmes. Opening in safe mode then running Malwarebytes cured it.

I had this on the laptop with windows 7 - got microsoft free stuff and all's well, bit of a panic for a minute though.

eBay listings... this is fairly innocuous, but annoying and fat to easy to get. Looks like it commonly know about but not taken seriously enough

Some clever gits have found a way of infecting the banner adverts on ebay, not sure if it's just the one, or many of them.

Malwarebytes seems to be up to sorting them out, although you can kill the process from task manager if you know the name, then use msconfig to stop it starting at boot.

For the moment I shall confine my ebay activities to the iMac.

If I hadn't known what this thread was about, this post would be deeply disturbing. :D

Adobe update

Son says when he went to update adobe but as he is on eBay every minute of the day probably an advert banner there

We eventually did the malwarebytes route but he had already panicked and bought a another virus checker ( I was at pictures it was my wives work lap top) ah well he learnt his lesson:rob
