have a set to fit. Any suggestions or tips before i start; the instructions are a bit vague and the photos not great

1150 or 1200? Try the USA Touratech site, they have .pdf fitting instruction files you can download, for just about every part. Just click on your model and then the part to find them.
 
If you can afford the TT ones I suggest you get a personal auto electrical trainer to do a 5 hour crash course in vehicle electrics :eek:

If you get sparks it's wrong and if it goes all bright and daylighty then you've got it right.

You don't say whether you are using an Aux switch or direct wiring to the dipped beam. Find a live feed (either your sidelights if aux switch, or dipped beam if always on) run a negative from your battery and work the relay switch out and your there (I think........awaiting correction).

I did the Hella Micro DE and FF50's on my 1150 and if you take your time you'll figure it out. Relays are the hard bit (took me a while to figure it and a little help from a friend).

PS Sparks and petrol don't mix (unless you want an insurance pay out).
