Hi all.

I'm looking for suggestions for a tank bag big enough to put a DSLR and attached lens and padding in. Would be interested to hear if anyone's done it and if there was any issues etc.
Thanks.

Not sure what bike you have but I use one of BMW's tank bags on my 1250.

Rated at 5kg and easily carry my 5D MK3, along with 24-105L and 70-300L

I don't use much in the way of paddling though.

What bike is it for? I have 3x tank bags: the dedicated x-Country one, which is only about 12 litres, but will take D5 and 24-70f2.8, plus 70-200f2.8 and a flash gun, or 2 and remote flash trigger.

For the old 80GS I have an Oxford Lifetime Luggage, magnetic tankbag that I bought in the late 70s for the KH250, it is still perfect, no nicks or tears and the rain cover is still without any cracks and totally rainproof. I dread to think how many miles it has done, probably coming up for 1 million on all the bikes I have had in that time, I put 400,000 collectively on the 3x R1150GSs I had, and 334,000 on the R100RS.
It will take more than the X-Country one because it is layered. Selveral bags zip onto each other, so for a day trip you don't have to take all the lot. Very versatile.

And here it is on the R80GS - you can see how the 'day bag' expands up into a more voluminous tankbag, but if that is too much for what you are taking, zip it down to low profile like it is on the 1150Adv. - That is the same bottom section in both situations, 1150 zipped down, 80GS zipped out - it folds down like concertina inside the zipped bit.

Modern bike, 650 V-Strom I have a GIVI X-Stream 20 litre, which does much the same thing, zips to expand upwards. It sits on a dedicated GIVI fuel filler ring. In this guise it will take the D5 (or D750) and 24-70 plus 70-200 and a flash, plus some nibbles and notebook. Outer pockets each side.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I have (or rather am getting delivered on Friday) a 2014 R1200GS. And the camera will be Nikon D7200 with 24-70mm and 35mm lenses.

@MrBean - Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know the model number of that so can get a look?

@King Rat - Thanks for the suggestions and the photos. They're really helpful. I'll be looking to see if Oxford still do a similar bag and I also like the look of the Givi. I like the idea of them being expandable and also the side pockets on the Givi. I also like the look of the ease of using a tank lock system.

I have a 1200 and a Nikon 7500 with 70mm, 300mm and macro lenses
I just use a camera rucksack on my back, which means when i ride to a location i can hop off and walk to wear I'm shooting and its an easy way to carry it.

I drop my camera bag in a tail pack. Possibly less vibes from the rear seat than the tank? Less handy to get to in a rush.

The idea was just to keep it handy really. I kind of lost the enthusiasm for my cameras a while back so I'm hoping I could incorporate it into any days out I have. It would be just nice to stop and grab the camera without too much messing around. Well, that's idea anyway!

They are standard that fit the LC models. I use both large and small.

I prefer them as I had a '63 plate plate LC model that had a distorted petrol filler neck and leaked petrol- I have no knowledge to suggest it was caused by a tank ring, but it does sound feasible. It was replaced under BMW used bike warranty.

I have both that fit the LC 1200/1250 if your looking to buy one. DM if interested
