Tank bags - which are the best ones?

Actually it’s a fairly new topic for the 1300 section I think. I have an Aliexpress one which I bought from a kind member on here. Waterproof inner bag as well.
Fits fine but I must say I don’t particularly like tank bags. Too bulky. But I do have one now. I tend to use side frame bags and the radiator bags. It’s all what everyone prefers.

Actually the Aliexpress ones are fine and for a fraction of the cost. I have a spare set of Ali express Radiator bags as I bought a set of original ones from a gent on here and there is a difference in fitting and quality but it’s not huge.
Again what fits your pocket.
thanks guys

I had the Givi/Kappa tanklock system on 3 previous bikes. The Kappa bag I used from 2015 to 2023 is still serviceable if a little tired.

On the V85, I did not like the offset ring arrangement from Givi so I switched to SW Motech. I have a couple of the SW-M waterproof bags, the small one and a larger, expandable one. The system works well but I have one gripe, compared to the Givi system, the mechanism on the SW-M bags takes up quite a bit of space inside the bag. This is not so bad on my larger bag but eats into the space in the smaller bag.
I agree with the room inside taken up by the fitment. I guess they want to keep the aesthetics as clean as possible and not stick up too much but it does compromise storage space

Get the waterproof one then . Much better than rain cover fafferage
i ordered the 4l waterproof one but didn't like the magnetic lid design that covers over the top of the bag. You cant really put anything in there and it could pop open . Can't see the benefit other than that was the best design they could come up with to keep water out of the top of the bag

While it’s true that straps can potentially abrade the pain a wee bit ,,,, they are simple , with nought to go wrong ( Enduristan supply spare clips with them from new ( never needed to replace one so far 👍) .
We were stuck for an hour in a fuel station somewhere north of Trondheim in Norway last year , because the SW Motech bag release system had jammed up ( we went through a load of open surface roadworks , and recon dust jammed the mech ) ,,, anyhoo after much patience ,, appropriate engineering related swear words and WD 40 ,,, we managed to free it off 👍
glad you got sorted. All adds to the experience and the stories afterwards...ta(y)

Having only recently purchased a new 1300 GSA and after watching numerous videos on tanks bags, I must say, for what, on the surface appears to be a well thought out and well equipped bike, it does seem to be a little bit lacking in this department. The OEM 12 litre BMW tank bag, to me, appears to be a little bit bulky and possibly restrictive when it comes to moving around on the bike and to top it off, its neither waterproof nor does it have an external waterproof cover.
Then you have various other after market tank bags such as sw motech. They do manufacture some smaller tank bags (4litre and up) which do have a waterproof external cover to pull over, but they fasten on using the filler tank ring system only. This seems a bit of a shame that they don't utilise the front fastening clip (the one closest to the riders seat). I haven't yet found a manufacturer that produces a smaller size bag that uses the bmw front and back fastening clips in a more user friendly way..... Penny for your thoughts. I am guessing this is a well discussed topic...John
The GSA 1300 OEM bag is definitely the right choice for this model—it’s a bit large, and it’s a bummer it isn’t waterproof. I use a big shower cap from Amazon to keep it dry in the rain, which works well. It’s too bad no one has made a range of aftermarket waterproof bags that fit the GSA just right. Also, it’s pretty pricey for what you get.

I’ve used the OE 12L bag for a year now. It’s on all through summer, till I start using the top box during the wintertime.
It’s also a doddle to refuel, as the bag tilts on its back hinge thingy.
You don’t notice it’s bulk when you’re riding unlike some other OE and aftermarket bags I’ve seen/used. No naffy faffy straps to bother with, either. It was a game-changer for me. But, each to their own.
Mine’s never wetted-out, nothing’s had to be thrown away due to soaking and the bikes been ridden through some torrential motorway rains, on the move, the screen gives a lot of protection; mebbee if you leave the bike and bag standing out in heavy rain long enough, it’ll get a good soaking but how often do folk do that?

As posted earlier, if you don’t want to pay dealer OE prices, try an Alienexpress copy…. though it seems their stuff are identical but haven’t cut the quality standard to be sold by the mothership.

I have the 6L to 8L Wunderlich click on bag on my 1300GSA. It is dry inside the inner bag. Set at 8L I can get my Scott waterproofs and waterproof gloves in, but no room for anything else.

I rotatated the click plate under the bag by 180 degrees, to move the bag rearward, so I could still use the phone compartment in the tank. Easy to do.

Nicely made, doesn't interfere with anything. I wish the click on mechanism could be locked on, so I didn't have to remove it for security. I put a small padlock through the zipper eyes, so it can't be easily opened.

On my previous 1250GS I used a strap on bag from Mosko Moto. I liked it a lot. That was like the Tardis. It had plenty of room, but I couldn't see an easy way to strap it to the 1300 and still use the phone holder.
