I know this has probably been done to death. But can anyone shed some light on the best tank bags for a (Pre 2008) 1200GS?
Has anyone tried the 'filler cap ring' fixing type, or are baglux (tank cover), original BMW, or Touratech better?
Appreciate any feedback. :thumb2

I`ve got a Touratech and I reckon it`s really good. Plenty of room and a decent sized removable map pocket.

It`s been upside down a couple of times and it hasn`t broken or been dislodged:augie

I'm a fan of baglux, have had it on my last 4 bikes - still on the original tank bag :thumb2

FAMSA for me. Exceptional value for money & really well made. Fits a treat as well. Can`t fault it :thumb

I bought the S&W Motec tankbag at Christmas with the tank cap ring and apart from a few fitting problems I bought on myself, it seems fine. For reference though the mount ring mounts with the hooks facing back and a few people on here have mentioned they don't like that idea in the event of an accident. When I fitted mine I also did the fuel cap modification to turn it around so it opens forwards. This meant I could turn the hooks to the front of the bike but also means I had th thread the release through the inside of the bag. In my opinion this makes it safer as you need to get into the bag to release it off the tank and a small padlock on the zippers will keep the honest thieves out. It goes on and off easily and doesn't spoil the lines of the bike with straps and additional mounting pads. I got the large GS bag and the only annoyance if that it sits slightly out of square with the bike with the expanding section zipped up. Mine must have been sewed slightly out of square, but overall it is well made and solid. No problem when expanded but then it is very large.

Tank bags

I bought a Wunderlich expanding tankbag, and I wouldn't tour without it now. It holds an amazing amount, and didn't leak despite four days of rain in Norway in 2006, and similar in France last year. I tend to use it all the time, for maps, mobile phones etc, as the weight distribution is better than shoving it all in the topbox.

The only negative is some of the fixings require velcro on the tank, but it does allow easy refuelling by just unclipping at the front and folding back.

Well made and good looking too - well worth the money.

Yep the BMW for me.
Bought on here and it’s a nice piece of kit. The little fanny pack is a bit naff it interferes with my belly space. :augie

Thanks for the views and advise - sounds like there are a few good options and will come down to personal preference - I have always had baglux in the past. Mmmmm...

i have used a touratech day tank bag.....because if i put my hubbys bmw tank bag on............i have trouble seeing over it.......as i'm only 5.4....lol

I had the BMW bag but wasn't happy with the way the bag and everything inside sagged to the left when you parked the bike on the side stand.

I currently have the electricified version of the SW Motec bag that GSwadd posted and am generally happy.

Looked into which bag to get and went for "Held" for about £65. Looks to be very well made ,about average size ,decent map pocket on top, easy access cash pocket at the back as well as glasses pouch. It fits 2007 tank very well via strap around headstock at the front and velcro at the back.
All in all much happier with this than £160ish for BMW bag

Mine is a touratech which I inherited with this GS- very happy with it. I like the map window on top -large enough for A4 maps - the window is much larger than on a mates BMW bag. It stays dry, is easy to get off quickly, flips up for tank fill up.

Went for the SW Motech option that clips on the tank ring.
Very pleased - quality seems good and the size is perfect.
All I need now is the bike back!! - Still at the local dealers :(
