Tank protector - needed or not?

Guys,

I'm wondering if a tank-protector is needed on the R1200GS? Has anyone of you got some nut-rubbing-marks on the tank or is this one of those bikes that you "don't go that far with"...

If it's needed, Dutchman and CC, pay attention...

When I want to get a hussle on I noticed I sit further forward into the tank. Admitedly the sllight upturn of the seat may keep me away from the tank, but why risk it when a few quid can save scrathces.

I have also put some lobs on the side of the tank as I did note that my knees were making some marks on the sides of the tank.

I had a ride on the 1200 GS today and when I looked I was sat a good couple of inches away from the rear of the tank. My knees were touching the sides so in my opinion a tank protector is not necessary but side protectors (spots and stripes) may be.

Being a fat bastard, my jacket rubs on the tank, about two inches above the top of the seat.

Fortunately, I discovered this while doing 1000 miles on my dealer's demo......the marks polished out, because they were caused by the jacket fabric rather than a zip/stud.

Therefore I've fitted a small tab of clear plastic film to the affected area on my own bike(s).............problem solved!

I have to say that this is the first time I've seen any mention of 1200GS tank protection on any forum........so we've no early plans to produce a tank protector......

But, if the demand is there.........................?

Because I'm fairly tall (6'1") I sit well back on the seat, so even my prodigious embonpoint (yes, I'm a fat bastard, too!) doesn't graze the tank.

I've usually had clear plastic on my tanks too, but they quite quickly start looking horrible, both from scratches and water/wax that gets into the edges and seams. On one of my previous bikes I had a very nice carbon fiber thing - and even if I'm not a big fan of tank protectors - this one was fabulous.

... but... it looks like there's no immediate demand for it...

Which I guess is good...

Hi there...I ordered the catalog from Wunderlich on the 1200 GS, and there is a photo of tankprotectors for the bike, but I can't find anywhere to order them...they look great!
Anybody knows more about those?
