whilst browsing the site last week i came across the cat control plug thread and thought i would give it a try on my 03 1150 gs fitted with y piece , remus can and k&n ,,made up the short length of wire and fitted to terminals 5 & 6 and i must admit i never noticed any great difference performance wise but there are a few side effects on the down side when slowing down the engine sometimes cuts out and you have to be pretty quick with the clutch when this causes the back wheel to lock up  also i now have to use the choke when starting from cold which i never did before even on the coldest of days but there is an up side it doesn't backfire as much on the over run and i now get a substantial more miles to the tank like over 50 miles per tank over the same route under very similar conditions ,,miles to tank before 150-160 now 210miles to the same tank this leads me to think that it was (a) running very rich before (though i don't see why with a freer breathing engine thought it would run leaner) or (b) it is now running lean  dangerously very lean ,,so before i go to the expense of dyno time could owners of similar machines tell me what they regularly get to a tank ??? my ridding style could be described as i don't hang about cruise 80-90 mph almost everywhere .. all comments and opinions gratefully received :thumb2..........gordon

pull off your jumper lead you made.... still any problems? I can't think of the little mapping link making that much difference.

its the only mod i done from one weekend to the next and asides from the occasional engine cut out (i always cover the clutch anyway got into the habit after being reared on two strokes) its not a big problem and i do rather like the extra tank range all i wanted to know was what the average gser gets to a tank to help me make up my mind to whether the engine could be running leaner than the average :nenau

+1

maybe your bike need setting up, 150 miles to the tank is very low, even if you ride hard,

Normally get around 180 miles to reserve (up towards 200 miles since drilling filler inlet) from similar riding on my 01 1150. Stopped mine from backfiring altogether by junking Y piece and silencer and putting cat back on with a stubby pipe - good weight loss as well! Tried ccp mod but did not seem to make any difference on mine.

this may be a stupid point but did you take out the fuse for a few seconds, reinstall it then start your bike. This will reset the unit.. without taking out the fuse it won't make any difference. I have a GSA so get about 300 per tank with panniers two up....

yes thought about the stubby option but the bike with no exhaust its not right is it  a bit like alcohol free lager is like liking your sisters fanny the taste is the same but its just not right is it :D

300 2 up:drool:drool no never took any fuses out but i did disconnect the battery would this do the same thing:nenau

Rochuck - don't get excited about 300 miles to the tank. The GSA has a 32 litre reservoir to suck from! :comfort The standard GS only has 25 (I think)...there is a good bit more in the GSA anyway.

I am intrigued as to why you are getting so few miles out of yours too.

Interested to find out about this "drilled the filler inlet" thing. Tried searching on here, but I can't work the search system. Came up with nothing related at all.

Must admit, I have kept my bike standard and she runs fine. Could do with a taller top gear.......but 4000 at 70 is better than any Jap will ever do. They all seem to be geared for 5k and 70.

.

I thought everyone knew about drilling the filler neck - try searching for "filler mod", maybe searching in the "GS mods" section would be better.

Drill a 6mm hole in the filler neck ( but be careful where as there's a metal tube runs around the neck inside, and if that is drilled water will drain into your tank) so you use the internal expansion section of the tank
Gets you another litre and a half, but if you do brim the tank don't park it or leave it on the side stand, just brim it and ride.

Mr Steptoe with respect, you should have finished the message by saying if you use the sidestand you will dump that extra juice on the deck.:hide:

My 1100 drips fuel from a breather / overflow (one of the hoses down by the brake pedal?) even if I just fill to the bottom of the filler neck (not done the mod). I guess I have a leaky internal hose - something to check next filter change.

Drill a 6mm hole in the filler neck .... but wouldn't this let water straight into your tank as the cap is not water tight :nenau

you drill the inside of the neck :blast

30 seconds of searching in GS Mods as suggested by Steptoe:

i removed my ccp last week and although bike seemed to pull slightly better, cured backfires when easing off the throttle, has i was riding the bike to work i was watching the bars on the fuel gauge dissapear as each mile went by:eek:infact if i had,nt taken my bank card wiith me i,d have been walking home, also the exhaust note seemed alot louder for some reason.
