Tank top panel fit and gap?

Had the top and side panels off this aft to fit a new filter and run a 12v socket to the front.. all going well until I've put the painted top panel on... one side is about 3mm gap panel the silver plastic side, the other side slightly bigge may be 5mm !

I'm sure it was not like this before, but can't see any way to close it up. I've even revoved the filler cap so I can see how it sits, and thet tabs on the underside of the panel sit on top of the tanks so cant go any lower...
Sides screw on to the the tank and unless you packed on the underside, they cant go any higher... so whats happened?

Was it like this before?... are they all like this?... can't say I've noticed the gap before????
 
Installed wrong?.. will have to read when back from the pub... So you can get it out?... Saturday AMs job then ��
 
OMG.. ethanol.. and I need a new tank!... but at 15.00 it was okay, by 19.00 it had grown... are you sure this is the problem ;)

maybe it was like this before?... no one on here has a fix for it other that apply a bit of grease to the rubbers...

Sure it was not like this before... off to bed to sleep off the 5 pints!... :)

All will be clearer today, 5 pints make things grow bigger :jes
 
Just taken it all back off... and even off the bike with the top and RHS panel together I'm getting the gap... so guess this is how they are... just not seen it before?... :)

Well that thread seems to show many have a problem, I must admit I took my 2017 LC to bits the other week, and everything went back nice and flush, maybe tank has not had time to expand, who knows.
 
A few well placed cable tie bases on the tank ;) job done... still about 2mm on the RHS (if you get down, bend your neck up to look etc)... so happy with that.

Got to say I'm a bit shocked at the quality of the plastic mouldings ... more how thin they are... I've seen thicker plastics in a box of chocolates... ... or os it weight saving ;)

that was the first thing that shocked me, coming from a Harley world, I thought crap ive bought a plastic bike, but in a real world it makes sense, you break it easy to replace it, these are offroad designed bikes, same as racing bikes, easy to fix if broken, and less expensive than metal.
 
Guess so.. but my first crosser was a IT465.. and had many since, plastics were not as thin on them... the air guides into the rads must be all of 1mm thick... a stone hit would probably puncture them.

I've spent the winter doing up my FXR into a Fatboy look working with real steel etc (don't ask why.. just something to do)... these are just plastic and cheap thin plastic at that... mmm

Ahh that is true the penny pinchers have been out again, but so have the Harley penny pinchers, new ones look so cheap and plastic.
 
thats why mine is a 1989 one... propper stuff ... I'll find a pic... now has better pipes on it as the SS ones were a bit loude and didn't work well... also look like drinking straws LOL

Proper metal 😎.... Just been to the bike shop.. LOL.. mine is nothing looking at some of them! White ones are best... Rest are quite bad... Have a look at this one FFS.

Looks like that one is not clicked down properly. I've taken mine off many times now, and there is a knack to getting it to click into place properly with the locking tabs properly seated. I usually push it down round the fuel filler first, then push down while squeezing into the middle all down the sides on top of the tank, and then the same for the section that goes down the front of the tank. You will hear it click in in various places when you do this, after which it should be seated properly.
