Tank treatment query.

This relates to a Moto Guzzi airhead not a BM but hopefully some of you can help.

My mate Jim has a 1973 V7 Sport Guzzi, but is having some trouble with the inside of the tank rusting. On a long run he will have to stop once a day, remove the float bowls from the carbs then remove and blow out the main jets as little flecks of rust are getting in there.

How can he remove most of the rust from inside the tank and then treat the tank in the hope of preventing this from happening. Cutting the base of the tank then welding and respraying would be the absolute last resort and one he is keen to avoid if possible. Buying a second hand tank may be an acceptable option, but how does one know that one wouldn't end up with the same problem in that tank too?

Are there any chemicals/solutions which will dislodge the rust and what could be used to line the inside of the tank again?

All practical suggestions will be gratefully received.

Bung a length of chain in the train and rattle the blighter round a lot to shift the rust flakes.

Rinse and repeat until no more flakes come out.

Then go to Frost and buy the POR 15 tank sealing kit.

Other similar products are available but I can't remember their names.

Oh, and fit a pair of inline fuel filters.

Frost have the stuff. I did the tank on my 83 year old Austin 7. Absolutely great. Just remember to takje trhe tap/filter out before you pour the sealer in.
It comes in three parts. One to get rid of petrol residue, one to rustkill and prepare the tank and the final sealer. Easy peasey.

Another one for POR15
Invented by a Walsall bloke don't cha know

I use a load of Ball bearings plus a dogs choker type chain.
Put them in the tank with a bit of parrafin and do the SAMBA for an hour.
gets all the looseish crap out first ............
Then when por15 is in tank, duct tape the openings and rotate regularly to even out coverage
I used the 'leccy spit on the UNLIT garden BBQ

on a V7 sport tank, i'd be inclined to not use sealer unless it's absolutely needed to hold the petrol in. likelihood is it will be fine with a sealer, but i have had a bad result with one application, might have been me but i wouldn't be wanting to find another tank for one of those bikes.

i've had exactly the same rust problem with my lemans. i just cleaned it out and it's been fine for years now.
