Hi, my bike is an '04 GS with 26,500 miles on the clock. Since my last holiday around France I have noticed that, when cold, there is a noticable tappet rattle/knocking noise that appears to be coming from the left hand cylinder.
I have tonight checked my tappets and rocker arm free play and all was OK, one or two very slightly wide but not excessive. I have adjusted them anyway. I built it up and fired her up; still knocking as before. When the engine starts to warm (2 bars on the temp gauge) it shuts up and sounds normal. There would appear to be no problem with the engine as last weekend I had a quick blast up to the Lake district without missing a beat.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I was thinking timing chain tensioner, throttle body synchronisation?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Timing chain tensioner.

Relax.

(Use 20W50 to make it a bit quieter)
