I saw A gent from this forum putting up a tarp,
made it look easy, but i still had the question, why put a tarp up over your tent?

Any way, to answer your question…
So that when you get out of your tent in the morning, you not stepping on a wet grass after a rainy night or when morning dew settles down. Plus should it rain, it’ll be a nice place to sit under, or lay in your tent without rain directly hitting it first, comfort and all that.
But most importantly, sunshade.

Some reasons:
UV protection - cheaper to trash a tarp than replace a Hilleberg outer.
It is also quieter when it rains- less drumming overhead
Keeps tent dry for quicker pack down.

Having a lightweight, 4 season tent meant no headroom, but a tarp over the bike and tent entrance meant somewhere dry to get changed.

And i can sit in the dry and watch you getting wet through my windows, Windows, did i mention i have three windows in my hobbit hole

Wet or dry its going into its sack , as long as it's dry inside thats all that matters lol
Always take my old Decathlon tarp on tour - sometimes never used but very useful when needed to create a communal area out of the rain or sun
Snap..!! Decathlon tarp was a game changer for me and means my tent stays much warmer/cooler/drier than it would otherwise.
Someone recommended fitting 4mm bungee elastics in place of the guy lines and that makes it soooo easy to put up single handed so you have somewhere dry if it’s raining within minutes.

Nothing worse than being forced out of your tent because it is roasting in there.
You just can’t beat having a tarp!
