tax disc holder

This may be a silly question but why worry about it getting wet. My tax disc looks exactly the same as when it was put on the bike in May last year but I know it will be soaking wet and fall to bits when I take it out. It is just as valid and readable wet or dry.

It is in one of those cheap chrome holders that the dealer put on the bike but it does the job and a dry tax disc in a stupidly expensive holder wont do it any better.

Exactly. :thumb2

I'm not bothered about it getting wet and I hope that it is soaking and falls to bits if some twat decides to steal it.

The only reason that I don't have a cheap holder is because they rust and fall apart. I paid seven quid for a solid stainless steel one from an ebay supplier.

I used to subscribe to the view that it was safe under the seat or in your wallet because as long as it was taxed, DVLA wouldn't bother with 'fail to display'.

The trouble is, that has changed and it's now a fixed-penalty offence and that means that it's an easy way to meet FP issue targets for some.

I've not displayed a tax disc on any of my bikes for many years now and I've never had a problem either here or abroad to date. The Police know the minute they've stopped you whether your taxed or not because they have instant access to the DVLA database

When (if) asked, I tell them its at home due to my previous one being stolen and that I would be happy to produce it for them. The worst / negative response I've had was to ask me if I could maybe hide it under the seat??

Although technically an offence of course, I feel most most plod fully understand the problems of securing a tax disc on a bike. Its always worth remembering that if a thief can nick both your number plate and your tax disc (fairly easy on a bike in most cases) at the same time they can cause you a great deal of grief in a very short time

Personally the risk of getting nicked for "non display" is a risk I'm willing to take. My experiences with the Police have been pretty positive but I don't ride in North Wales / Cat & Fiddle areas etc... so I've not been subjected to "mass stops & prosecutions" of course. If I were riding in these areas I would probably fit it just to avoid a meaningless fine

Others may disagree of course, its a free (well fairly) country after all

Part of my job is processing Fixed Penalties. I recently had one from Sussex for a disc not being displayed on the correct part of the windscreen!!!

One state in the US where I lived had tax stickers that one stuck onto your registration plate. The stickers were a type that once stuck on could not be removed without destroying them. Easy enough to display and no worries about them being stolen.

I REST MY CASE!!.....i seen traffic wardens issue a ticket for a vehicle being 2-3 inches over a parking bay????...i myself last summer had pulled into my favourite seaside cafe and as many bikers do, parked up on a very wide footpath (not in any way blocking access) and as i proceeded to take off helmet i noticed the said traffic warden eyeing me from a safe distance...so not as to give him the pleasure i waved at him (with one finger)and parked quite a distance and walked to the cafe..

I just use a normal tax disc holder and some bathroom sealant.

Never had a problem yet, and its cheap as chips.

Simples really, get an averagly good and secure holder with several screws around the seal . . . . .:aidan

+1 for this type of holder, but I just cling film the tax disc an pop it in.

It used to live here:

But now lives here:

my tax disc gets wet all the time and it only a problems to get it off at the end of the year and it still looks the same and as all ur bikes info is on the big police computer they can just quickly check

For the jobs worths out there....

Don't forget that it should be exhibited on the nearside of the vehicle :)

:dunocheers sorted it...one avg quality holder (stainless) an clear sealant....£14 for a tax disc holder????? bit ruff methinks

I know this:

and I know this too:
.... and forward of the rider:augie:augie:thumb

. . . but I gave up giving a toss as there are very few suitable mounting points on today's bikes. I reckon if the disc is on pretty obvious display somewhere, then I should avoid an FP notice.

(and isn't multi-quoting a pain in the butt, but thanks to the help via the search tool I cracked it)

Simple, totally waterproof, 5"square of clear sticky backed plastic (remember Blue Peter) - place disc on face down and stick on side of beak.

Perfect.

That's brave, Andy - admitting you do illegal work!! :augie

Oh dear - you've all got me started now!! :blast

Did you not know - ANY fixed penalty notice is ILLEGAL ?

I certainly didn't until recently, when I was directed to this MP's blog page -

Have a read - it certainly opened my eyes to an ever growing scam !!

He certainly seems to have opened up a can of worms - and I guess the more people that know about our Bill of Rights of 1689 the better.

Agreed - the ink doesn't run anyway, and it stays in there till the next year.

He may have a point when it comes to Companies House levying a fine for late submission (but I suspect that it is a "fee" rather than a fine).

When it comes to FP's for motoring offences, the Rights of the recipient are not breached:

Have a look at a FP notice, all will state that you have the right to trial. By paying the FP, the recipient waives that right unilaterally.

Perhaps that explains why this two year old "bombshell" has proved to be a damp squib?
