Hi All,

Just a question to ask. I have oil getting into my gearbox. I have changed the oil a few time just to keep her running till I get my other bike up and going, after which I can strip it out.

The gear box was rebuilt a year or so ago (before I bought her) Its the clean and shiniest part of the bike. I have the receipt : all bearing and seals were replaced and it was a reputable (although i can't remember who) re-builder.

Any idea where its likely to be getting in? Where can it get in? I presume

One is supposed to have oil in one's gearbox, innit!

you say oil getting into your gearbox.. do you mean water ??

if so check the condition of speedo cable rubber bellows where it enters the box.

Gearbox cable cover looks ok - is it worth slicking some silicon sealant around it or anything like that?

Yup..water can still sneak past the rubber cover

Pete, could it be dirty oil and water getting into the gearbox????

If so it could be the breather for the engine that goes into the air filter housing, the fixing screw for the housing goes into the top of the gearbox,

If this screw has come loose you can get all that rubbish in the gearbox thro that screw hole,

Plastic wire tie round the top makes a good seal.

Also make sure that your speedo cable securing bolt is the special BREATHER type..
as that can f uck seals and let water ingress..if it ain't one....

Hi Proff - ahhh I'll check that. I didn't realize it was different. Found a picture on motorworks site so I know what to look for ...

Why I love this forum...

So, servicing my G/S yesterday I saw what looked like clean gearbox oil, but with a reasonable amount of water floating on top.

Not good, I was more than a little concerned .

Now, on my own I would have mucked around with a few things, and given it hours and hours of thought and worry before possibly coming to any useful conclusion.

But, within 60 seconds of searching the forum, I realised that:
1) I'm not alone
2) It's not necessarily that serious (I've changed the oil, obviously)
3) There's a quick and extremely easy fix
4) The fix costs about 0.1 penny

I'll remember that next time people whinge about paying a yearly subscription.

(Although possibly those that whinge are owners of those more modern, and far more reliable GS's, so they never need such assistance...)

When my gearbox was stripped, it had been full of water at some stage and it had basically shagged a good proportion of the box. Had to replace 3 of the gears ( was replacing 5th anyway). Something to do with folk insisting on taking their airheads swimming!!!
