After washing the 394734 tones of dirtiness glued to the bike thanks to ACF-50....

I found that the paint is starting to go away from the frame where in contact with my left boot/trouser.

I'm planing to visit the dealership and see what the say.... Bike is a year old and 7k. Has anyone risen this to the dealer??

Thanks!

You need, should have applied some helicopter tape by 3M, I did when I found a small scratch done by the previous owner. Applied to the front bar and diagonal bar it is virtually invisible and very tough.

Thanks!

I will do that 

However, I have to admit that I am bit.... fed up of considering little problems like "acceptable" in BMW. My old fazer is 13 years old and never had a problem or a scratch on the paint, I paid considerable more for the GS, and I already can't remember how many times I have to visit the dealer for warranty issues...

Thanks again!

Oh for heavens sake ... if you ride it it won't go rusty, you'll keep it nicely polished :D

It's called patina :blast

My 800 at 111,000 miles ....

I applied a clear on the frame of these two bikes and it has worked perfectly.

$5, invisible, easy to install, and very effective.

Read up on water based paints and lead based paints.

Water based paint and legislation for its introduction is the standard BMW party line excuse for poor paint finish. FFS at £16,000 plus for the bikes the frames should be powder coated with a proper galvanised undercoating.

On my lc with only 600 miles on the clock putting nylon bungs in the frame holes chipped the paint

My 08 came to me with Touratech running plates over the swing arm bearing area. Great I thought especially as one was running thin.
But when I stripped the bike for powder coating the VERY WORST affected area was behind those "protectors". The gunk behind was greasy with ACF-50 but rust didn't even notice.
It's now looking fab in gloss black powder with zinc undercoat and has helicopter tape on frame and RHS side of swing arm.
What happens when the coating gets chipped is another thing.

I'd have thought that was considered wear & tear

If your boot/trouser has rubbed this away then surely it must have been visible and not under all the road crap stuck to the bike? :nenau

Maybe.... but commuting every day on the bike, make you miss some silly things until you have the time to look at the bike properly.

If the boot/trouser couse that in less the 7k.... the bike won't last too long before it looks like.... crap.

Dfo, I don't think we are getting the quality we should, considering how expensive our bikes are... Appart from that, I am very happy with my GS :)

I suspect BMW and other bike manufacturers know that most bikes will average no more than 25k in 10 years in ownership. (there are exceptions) How many GS1100 or GS1150 are still around and owners won't upgrade to a new bike because there are no problems with the current bike? It cannot be in BMW interests to build the new GS to the same standard as the 1100 series.

Paint quality has dropped and while the bikes are relatively new, we concern ourselves with condition as this is based on value at sale or trade in time. Over the years I have lost money on cars many due to depreciation and or quality issues. I changed the way I purchase goods in that I think about its purchase costs and how long do i expect a return on investment. Return to me = low depreciation. I take this view with Televisions, mobiles and white goods, even my gas boiler.
Example, my wife car purchased new 11 years ago and still in good nick and we will keep it for another two or three years. Depreciation spread over 14 years. (6000 miles PA)
My 2014 GS will be kept until I am 60 which means the bike will be 14 years old. Depreciation spread over 14 years.
If the bike or car has some scratches or worn paint or a minor ding then this will not affect any resale value.

Appreciate people want to change sooner or desire different model and the above won't work but for me it does.

Wouldnt call any of those purchases an investment and all of those items will depreciate at the same rate for you aswell as me.
I would rather add a couple of grand every year or two n get a newer model. Much more enjoyable.
Dont ever buy brand new though ......
20%+ lost straight away. Now that is depreciation on epic scale.

I agree buying new you lose 20% but only if you sell in a year or two. Yes they all depreciate but it is the rate they depreciate, car and bike works out at £700 per year! Bear in mind both purchased brand new! so no dodgy history. I suspect you would also have to add more than a grand or two to purchase a newer model in most cases. But as they say we all have choices. I make mine and everyone else makes there choice..

Yes people have complained.
Your boot has rubbed the paint. Your fault.
Get over it, it is a motorcycle that is using thin water based paint.

I am still on those models :)

80,000 miles across (2) 10 year old bikes

Paint on the rear subframe of the 50,000 miler is deep & lustrous, with no rust whatsoever - even in the 'unseen' areas, under the rear rack

Fork brace paint was a weak point on 1150's though :)

I saw a 183,000 mile 2005 1150 GSA last year & the paint finish over the whole bike was tip top & had zero rust or bad paint, anywhere on the bike

Only extra parts (except wearing items) was a gearbox bearing rebuild at 104,000 miles & clutch was only 50% worn at that mileage

The new GS bikes do look nice though

Would you take a pair of shoes back to the shop you bought them from wanting a refund as the heel has worn through because its been rubbing against the pavement? Surely you could feel your boots rubbing up against the frame and done something about it.
