google for '0x0000008E 1Zx32.sys' looks like some sort of infection.

The 0x8e error is an unhandled kernel exception, but the giveaway is the 1z32 driver code that's doing it. It appears to be a rootkit driver from the few google links it throws up.

Ianf i now pronounce you IT god. Thats 1 rootkit duly removed from the laptop and so far the bsod has yet to show his ugly face.:bow:bow:bow

Any ideas on the TrayApp feature that its trying to load from a disc and wont cancel???

Try and google the error - there's loads of stuff on the internet and points to failed software applications etc etc.

Here's a link to an article about this. It's apparently a stray installer that runs every time you log in, and fails, causing it to try again each time.

There are links on there showing how to work out what product id it's trying to install, and a utility to stop it, all from microsoft.

Funny!? Where are all the AppleO'philes to say you should have bought a MAC?!! :D

This is getting scary. After cleaning it up ready to put xp back on, i put Avg on to check all was ok and now its scanning and im seeing page after page of .exe trojan horse downloader.generic4.Q

are you just installing XP over the existing one? i'd recommend doing a clean install every time.

I'd normally do the 'get a mac' thing :)

Sounds like this computer is riddled with crap, and Cookie is right - just re-install it on a newly formatted partition, having backed up any doc/mucic/pics you want to keep on anther disk. You could easily spend a month of sundays trying to fix all this otherwise.

I was about to whack the disc in.......................
Then i was told that there was a risk of losing drivers for the sound etc if i just re install it. Is that boll*** or not ?
I dont want to save anything on the laptop, so i was going to put xp back on it/over the top of whats on it, and start afresh.
Thanks guys:thumb

Unless you have saved the original drivers and can back them up on a cd, I would not worry at all about doing a fresh re-install.

The standard Xp drivers will get your pc up and running, all you need to do after that is go onto the internet and download a fresh set of drivers to cover your gfx and sound drivers etc etc. after you have re-installed XP, you might find for example that the screen resolution is set quite low - but it will be perfectly functional. Then download the gfx driver, sound and look for any other device drivers that are missing.

You can normally find the original build drivers on the manufacturers web site for the model you have and download them from there. once you have done that, save them to a separate sub directory and burn them onto a disk for the next time you need to re-install (if ever).

So.........just get on with it and sort the drivers out afterwards.

Thousand apologies - I was busy indulging in yet another few hours' of trouble free, virus absent, blue screen of death not-at-all-there-even-a-bit, restart, not a chance, surfing and stuff.

Here's a cut-out-and-keep "Get a Mac" for future use..

Get a Mac - you know it makes sense....
