Been looking at a 650 GS in a dealer today. Asking price is £995 but it has 70+k miles on it and jumps out of 2nd gear. Looks tatty, too. The thing is, though, this could be a good winter hack/project bike. Anybody got any ideas 'bout the likely price of a good used motor/g'box lump as this seems the easiest way of bringing the thing back to life?

Thoughts, anyone?

As for gearbox problems, check out the uk F650 site.
www.bmwf650.co.uk
which has links to the USA site, Chain Gang. Their FAQs will be able to spread some light on what might be up with the gearbox.

70k!!! Sounds like an ex-dispatchers tool!

motorworks do second hand engines from 450 to 800 according to the last copy of their catalogue that I've got.
Check out their web site
www.motorworks.co.uk
The other people to try for 2nd hand units is motobins. Not sure of their 'e' address, but try a search for motobins.
Best of luck,

lotta money

what reg is it ?

sounds like too much money to me, and its coming up to winter... so the salesman probably wants to shift it out of his pristine showroom anyway. i would say make the dealer and offer and put the savings towards a new box

Are you sure it was a GS with that mileage? Not a Funduro?

Ah the jumping out of second gear problem. If you look at this page from the Chain Gang website and go down to the part which says "If it slips OUT of (particularly 2nd) Gear, your problem is more serious: it may give you an idea to how costly or difficult it would be to repair.

Why

Don't touch it with a barge pole, sounds like a heap of junk to me.

A grand can buy all sorts of winter hacks that will be in much better condition than what you have described.

feeling opinionated, Tim

Thanks, chaps (and chapesses). My gut feeling was that it was overpriced. Nice bodywork hiding expensive problems.

BTW, in answer to the questions:

'N' reg, not a dispatcher's tool, deffo a GS.

‘N’ Reg F650 GS ???? I don’t think so.!!!

The BMW F650’ s first appeared in the UK 1993 as the Funduro & Strada (ST) these were on still on sale up to 2000 when they were replaced by the GS & CS.
So if someone was trying to sell me a ‘N’ reg GS I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole it sounds like a right mongrel.

have to agree with tim (even though he's kenny's mate)

i know its probably a sin to say this and wash my mouth out with soap if you want.... but a decent jap twin would probably serv you better for collecting the salt and being reliable at the same time... unless you wanted to off road of course.

sold my y reg (2001) er500 kawasaki 6 months ago for 2000 and it only had 4500 on the clock (unlike my GS which now has 7,000 on since march)
depends what you want out of the bike

good luck lrr xx

Hi littleredrooster

I agree with the guys (and Marion) stay clear of an N reg with that many miles.

If you are wanting a F650 I have a M reg one with 32,000 miles , no scratches dints marks for £1250 including 12 months tax (MOT runs out this month but I would give 12 months on that too).

I am selling it because my commute is going to change from using the tube to a 45 mile each way ride and in winter I am looking at a bit more protection than the F650 gives on the highway.

Email me at ([email protected])

Hmmm....bit too pricey. Original idea was to batter the dealer down to about £700 and then £200 max to sort it for the winter. Cheap wheels and a bit of profit at the end, perhaps. Oh well, next time maybe!

Sorry, ozrockrat. (is that an anagram?)

BTW, further enquiries reveal that it is not a GS (as said by the dealer) but a Funduro - thanks for the info, jackwabbit.
