Test Fart (it's spelt Fahrt)

Can't believe this is already a year ago... what can I say ... I went for a second "test fart...!" so it's a kinda a follow through from the previous report.... but this time we (more of us) went by canoe...

following on from the first post

why where when how and who

why go unfinished business

where it's not moved but instead of driving directly to the festival the half baked plan was rent canoes and paddle along the Schlei for a few days then join the festival and paddle back

when started a week before the festival and then we all had to be back in either the UK or other places around the 14th

how multiple bits of transport involved, I drove the truck loaded, over night as I had a job to finish. The others flew in from Manchester and then we all went in the truck to Arnis to collect the canoes...

Who.... well me, Paul, Son of Paul and Matt...

canoing experience... between the lot of us around 10 mins..... what could possibly go wrong...

Wapping, has said it a few times that Schleswig Holstein is totally empty... and that is totally correct... it's filled with nothing.... loads of nothing

The roads are fast, and dry in the late summer, becareful of tractors and locals that seem to be stuck in yester-year...

my plan was hatched last year and it sort of revolves around the Viking Festival... which is abit quirky... to say the least... cos I didn't know being a Viking was a thing.. and it is... and it's abit odd.... there's singing and fighting (sort of pretend) and drinking assorted food and whatever else...

While doing the research it became pretty obvious that the rules for canoe rental is very different over there... in the UK they'd probably want you do a course, or prove you know which pointy end is the front. Also UK HSE would suggest that there should be a plan... and forms and whatever... but in Germany they basically said "well the boats are yours till the end of the rental and we suggest you bring them back in one piece"

I did get asked had I ever been in a canoe before, to which I replied well I've had a go when I was in my teens... which now is 40+ years ago...

Paul my mate when I suggested it as a trip last year, said this sounds brilliant.... I wanna do this... which sealed the deal, he then chipped up can my boy come along...?

So this was a question amd as I hadn't thought about it, it sort of suggested that I was the team leader... I guess...? afterall he didn't know and it was my idea...

Promotion to expedition leader and we've not even left yet... shit the bed... As a responsible adult I thought it best to ask how old is the son...? and did Paul know anything about Canoes?

Paul got back to me mini paul is 11, and Paul senior was as clueless about Canoes as I was... but kinda said "well it can't be that complex, we'll figure it out...!"

being the leader and thinking "we're gonna need a bigger boat...!" cos three people plus stuff can't fit into 3 man boat

As you can tell I was taking my role very seriously... while this was a very loosely knitted idea it started to snowball into something else... made worse by Joe and Lewis my two trainees who said they'd fancy abit of this insanity... so now it's official we're gonna need a really BIG boat...

So while scratching my head and doing some other stuff like real work... I thought about what sort of things we'd need... cos a motorcycle trip has to be different to doing boat stuff... cos boats don't have wheels or panniers... anyway it was abit more than I had thought of...

Anyway it's so much simpler to go by car or bike... boats are like a pain in the arse what the hell was I thinking....

had a couple of minutes to add some stuff to the edit it's a very outline version... cos we shot it all on phones and I'm the only person who come home everyonelse sloped off to family hols in Greece, Portugal .... while I had to go back to work... but it does prove there is footage so it did happen...

it's pretty obvious that we got into the canoes... but the whole process of thinking what we needed was something... did we take too much kit, probably things I packed

2 tents Paul wasn't ablt to bring one as he him and Paul Jnr. only had limited luggage allowance.

I brought enough clothes for 4-5 days the total trip was 8 days... I also brought enough ready meals as there's nothing... which later turned out to be slightly inaccurate... there's something just very little and they close middle of the day 13.00-15.00 and knock off early around 18.00 pubs bars (ImBiss aka Schnellies) german domestic cafes... that also serve beer close around 21.00

As we had no idea it was best to bring more and see how we did...

So calling the boat/ canoe hire people was abit of laugh, they took my booking and when I explained I was based in the UK... it really took them back, "wi r yu renting ze Kanu frum arse?"

cos I don't own a canoe and why shouldn't I rent one from you...

"we will need ze geld/ muunie upfraunt...!"

yeah yeah... tell me how much and I'll sort that out...

so from the off it was a big deal to them, they'd never hire aby of their stuff to fellas from abroad.... so me rocking up in a overload 4x4 with people who spoke really heavily in yorkshire accent set them right off... there's me with my lardie dah southern accent and my ever so posh german accent... and people they can't understand at all...

that made the papers over there....

so a week before we're good to leave, Paul rings me up and says... "what sort of bag are you taking..?" and I hadn't really given it much thought apart from it needs to be water proof..

he goes on "I've found this, it's like a 300L waterproof bag... used by the army...!"

So I'm like cool get it, had really given it any thought what so ever... pleased with my advice I went off to have a cuppa and we had some of nice biscuits....

when we arrived in Germany the bag was basically bigger than the space in the canoe... :doh .... better still he'd bought two of the feckers for him Paul jnr. and Matt's stuff... so some decisions needed to be made...

anyway so the canoes get filled up and we head off into the watery vista... the thing that was really interesting neither canoe could do more than 10m in a straight line.. perhaps now on hindsight we should have had some practice.. nothing like getting amongst it for real...

leg one

Arnis to Lindaunis...

canoe touring is abit odd... now i've had time reflect on it all.... basically you zig zag about trying to keep in a straight line and fail, then when you want to avoid other boats, you just head towards'em flat out... the more you steer away from the fecking things the nearer you get to'em... there's no elegance or beauty it's like sitting in a wobbly plastic bucket trying not to tip each in there's a tons of water all round...

day one.... took ages and we took ages the distance wasn't all that far in the region of 10-12Km but with all the unscheduled zig zagging it felt like a marathon worth...

I was very organised, printed out the maps and laminated them into a flip book... of all the legs of this journey, had detailed waterproof maps which I then left behind cos I was rushing as the job I was on over ran... so the trip was basically done on google maps on my phone... the route was simple enough turn right out of Arnis go straight (yeah right) till you reach the railway bridge, under that bridge then turn right campsite on right... look for slip way... get out setup camp.... get a brew on the go...
