This question is for a GSA registered on 1 March 2022

Both the Fuel Consumption 1 (Average) & Fuel Consumption 2 (Average) automatically reset when parked over night on the Status Line and the My Vehicle Start Screen. The automatic reset is not ticked in the on board computer (I believe this would reset the on board computer after 6 hours or if the date had changed)

I've looked though the manual to see if there is any mention of over-riding this as I like to log my MPG when I am on tour and can't find anything.

Have I missed something or could it be a fault? If I can't find a solution I'll mention it to my dealer at it's 6k service next month.

Thanks in advance

Mike

I think it's a bug... Mine does something similar, in that the OBC average is definitely not a long term average since I owned the bike, whereas all the other OBC readings are from day 0. The OBC MPG seems to always be close to whatever the Trip Computer displays, but not always exactly the same. I have the Trip on automatic reset.

My TFT had a bug (January 2021) in not showing riding mode on the screen. Took it to the dealer and mothership replied that there must have been a bug during the factory firmware installation. So they told the dealer to reinstall the firmware, which they did, and now everything is ok.

Many thanks for the above replies

I'll have a word with Jefferies before my service next month

My 2018 1200GS randomly resets the consumption 1 perhaps every couple of weeks. About twice as frequently as it needs re-pairing with my Sena comms. Oddly it never forgets my mobile, just the helmet.

I also have an F850GS and have set the TFT to the same settings as the 1250GSA. The fuel consumption display works perfectly on the 850.

The 1250 is booked in for a service early next month when they will take a look at it. Been warned a software update would take between 20 minutes and 5 hours! Not a problem as I have a demo for the day!

UPDATE

I've been to the dealer today and they must have a way of checking the TFT functions as they've confirmed its faulty

Unfortunately they don't know what to do about it and have created a 'Tsara' with BMW to decide what to do

Mike

Reinstalling the firmware will solve it, you'll see. In my case they also opened the case with BMW in Germany and the response was to reinstall the firmware. They did and it solved my problem.

Been on your for a couple of weeks so didn't chase this up

Just been informed that BMW have given permission to change the YFT

Ironic thing is that it has worked perfectly for the last couple of weeks whilst on tour

Hi all, I realise this is an old thread but I'm inclined to post as there is no definitive conclusion to the discussion and here we are, 2 years later and I have the exact same problem with my 2024 bike, all be it a 1250R. . . .
The mpg figure in trip 1 randomly resets itself but yesterday, after riding to a friend's house, I returned to the bike and the data for trip 1 & trip 2 was all there but on this occasion, both mpg records were missing and replaced with a line of dashes. I can go days without any issues but then out of the blue . . . no mpg figure when I fire up.
I have googled the problem and found a number of instances going back several years and suggested remedies have varied between a new TFT being fitted to a firmware reinstall. In each case, there was no follow up and/or confirmation as to how the problem was solved.
I rang two motorrad dealers today and naturally, neither had "ever heard of this problem" - I'm always baffled by this response as they're at the sharp end and clearly, this issue is ongoing.
So . . . please would anyone who has experience of this confirm whether or not the issue was rectified and if so, how - firmware reinstall or new TFT etc.

For now at least, one dealer suggested I do a "reset" to see if this solves the issue - namely remove the battery, and briefly touch the positive and negative leads, before reinstalling the battery. I'm not hopeful but will try anything to sort this as I really don't want anyone setting to it with spanners unless really needed

I'm particularly interested to hear from Mike R and other posters in this thread. Thanks in advance . . . . .

The TFT was replaced and it worked perfectly for about 12 months c8000 miles then the problem resurfaced.

It is not as bad as it was (yet!) but began resetting itself on tour which is when I want it most

Thanks for your response Mike. Interesting that a new TFT didn’t ultimately solve the issue.
I was reading through some Facebook posts the other day (a 1250R group) and noticed a picture someone had posted of their Trip 1 screen, enquiring about something unconnected. I couldn’t help but notice the MPG was a line of dashes. When I enquired, the OP confirmed he had never noticed in 2 yrs. I suspect this issue is more widespread than we might realise.
My bike has its first service in 2 weeks time and I gave the dealer advanced notice of this issue - the chief tech with 15 yrs on BMWs has never heard of it!! Hmm - funny that!! 🙄
Anyway, I followed their advice and performed a “hard reset”, which involved removing the battery and briefly touching the positive and negative leads before reinstalling it. The jury is still out. If it continues, I will change from auto reset to manual reset on trip 2 and see if that affects things - I’m thinking the issue is software-driven and not a hardware problem but time will tell.
I rode to a friend’s house two days ago and when I returned to the bike around 4 hrs later, the mpg had reset on both Trip 1 & Trip 2 - all other data was unaffected!! 😳
One other theory which leads me to think the battery reset just might work. . . .
Prior to noticing this issue for the first time, I gad just installed an accumate pigtail on the battery.
When reinstalling the negative lead, I fumbled with it somewhat and as a consequence there was a small amount of arcing as the negative lead contacted the battery terminal. Whilst this can be considered normal, I wonder if it upset things because after reconnecting, I had to reset the time and date plus most of the Trip data had been corrupted. It might be coincidence but it was after this that I first noticed the mpg reset.
When I performed the system reset, I was careful to make rapid and firm contact of the negative lead with the battery terminal and hold it firmly in place whilst tightening the terminal bolt - there was no arcing and all data remained unchanged - time & date plus trip meters.
Currently, I am leaving mpg (1) permanently displayed so that I can glance down and check it before each engine start. Will keep the group posted!!!
Given the above two differing outcomes from having disconnected my battery, I wonder if the canbus/system is sensitive to voltage spikes.
Will update this post in due course

I think the problem is that you like to log your fuel consumption.
Hope this helps.

Well, we're a few months on and my problem is the same, if not worse. The trip meters randomly reset the mpg on trip1 and when I check, all data has been deleted from trip 2. Occaionally, Trip 1 deletes more than just the mpg and on one occasion, deleted all data apart from distance travelled since the last reset, whilst at the same time deleting everyting from Trip 2.
I suspect the next obvious thing to try will be a resinstall of the firmware

A sheet of paper, a pencil and (if necessary) a calculator, will be your best friends.
and rather than take the GS . . . .buy a pennyfarthing with wooden wheels for the full retro feel!! ;)

How about auto reset in settings menu ?
