It all started when I was "gifted" an old r80rt in September that had been left out in the rain for years. I was at sea at the time and missed the mountains - so I decided that when I got ashore i'd build something that I could use on green roads and soak up all manner of miles.
I posted a few threads on here looking for parts and advice. Initially I was going to mod the RT but I found a 92' gspd frame in Germany, the Drz 400sm front end in Dublin and I just started building (after I first built myself a workshop). The only things I used from the RT were the front wheel, carbs, motor and gearbox ... I was getting low on funds and had a shinko 705 (120/80/18) and decided to use the RT wheel (until I could afford an original GS wheel). I have a 310mm disk (that'll fit the GS wheel when I get one) and spacer in the post and I'll be using the standard nissin caliper. All the other parts were purchased in late night bidding sessions on fleabay.

So, here I am after 3 months - almost finished - I hope to get a decent ride in before I head back to sea.

Thanks again to all for your help and advice.
If anyone has any questions I'll be glad to try to help.

They're 47mm SHOWA forks, with adjustable rebound & compression - fork travel: 260mm / 10.2". Length of fork from top to wheel spindle: 92.5cm. The geometry is spot on with the 18" wheel and 120/80 tyre - front wheel is 1cm off the ground when it's on the center stand. I picked the forks and yokes up on "adverts.ie" for €200 delivered. The bottom yoke spindle is a little longer than the standard BMW setup and you do lose a little bit of lock as the thick forks touch the tank when fitted. I made an 8mm spacer and a "lock block" to combat this and the original DRZ steeringhead bearings fit the headstock perfectly. Also, there's a little bit of shaving to be done with the top instrument panel section (€15 secondhand) so that the top yoke clears it.
There are some lads on here that make very tasty aftermarket triple clamps that afford good lock and no need for a spacer - but they're expensive - do a search if you're interested.
Also, there's an excellent thread on advrider.com entitled "An Unholy Union V: DRZ forks on an Airhead" - but it's mainly about fitting the standard DRZ shocks - not the USD ones. Also check out another thread there entitled "My R100R thread (pic heavy)".
Cheers !
