The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

After a good going over in the dryblast cabinet, using 80 grit aluminium oxide it looks like this,
All clean, but it leaves a powdery open finish that will attract anything dirty or greasy
The black bits are just media.
We will come back to this later

I scraped off the resin, and blasted some more,
Very difficult to see,but definitely a pinhole or small crack ,
As luck would have it,
Our very own semi tame welder was enroute with Andyb,s Laverda cylinder head.
Can you fix it mister?
Course he can:bow

The rest off the afternoon was spent using my aquablast unit.
This is basically like a big bath tap.
The unit pumps a huge volume of media slurry, this being glass beads in water.
Added to this is high pressure air.
The end result causes micro peening of the surface sealing it and giving a nice satin finish

Well deserved Mike. Thanks for the photos, it looks great!

How do you avoid the horror stories of media getting into engine oil ways & causing damage later on down the line?

Cases look great by the way.

Depends on who is building the engine or box or whatever.
Big disclaimer.
I’ll do my best to clean the media.!
If I’m building the engine/ unit
I won’t start to build till I’m happy it’s free from residual media.
If it takes 10 hours,so be it.
Same applies to anyone else.
With old sand cast casings it’s not so tricky,
Jap stuff is a bit more involved

I spend a day with the air hose going over, and over, and over, and over ...

Fabulous work, whilst I'm enjoying the process, I can't wait to see the finished result.
