So how do you find out the weight of impact required to crack a rocker cover...?

Well - you make the mistake of leaving your 12GS on its centre stand, heavily secured to a lampost, alarmed, immobilised and lovingly wrapped up in its cover, on your normally perfectly safe and reasonably quiet road, carefully positioned to be out of trouble... only to come back late on Sunday to find that some anti-social ...insert derogatory expletive here - and I've used a few in the last 24 hours, believe me... has managed to knock it over... I mean let's be honest, you've got to be trying hard to knock a 1200GS of its centre stand, haven't you - particularly when it wasn't parked anywhere exposed? I suspect kids in a tricked up hatchback of some sort, driving like numpties to impress their prepubescent friends, probably with poor facial hair, no insurance, and certainly no driving ability... :spitfire

Apologies if this isn't the right thread for this, but I've got to vent my annoyance to people that understand... !!

So - checking out the situation in the dark, the extensive pool of oil gathered in the cover as my poor bike lay stricken on its side was a give away that all was not well on the rocker cover front... and just to add insult to injury I only changed the oil last week... so a whole sump full of fresh oil gone to waste :blast - if I could've laid my hands on the oiks responsible I'd've made them lick it up...

On the up side - and through gritted teeth I've been trying to be positive about this all day - they're made of tough stuff these bikes, cos clearly it went down with a bang, but despite the cracked rocker cover, broken indicator light and slighly upset alarm system, there doesn't as yet seem to be any more material damage... plus my technique picking the bike up was faultless, and BMW roadside assist did a very efficient job of shipping it off to the bike hospital... :)

There - I feel better now...

quite tempted by the metal plate style cylinder guard... have been wary of putting the bar style ones on as had an interesting conversation with two gnarly adventurer types who said they've both experienced problems with them where you can actually end up damaging the main engine block because of where the attachment point is, which ultimately is more damage than would've been caused to just the rocker cover... I guess you pays yer money and takes the choc ice... prefer the look of the metal plate style ones too... and ultimately, that's what matters isn't it...? :D

There's been a little craze amongst nobs around here of "tipping"

Perhaps that's what happened to you, one poor lad parks a scooter around Winchester and i've seen it on its side at least 20 times:rolleyes:

Shep:spitfire

Any of the local scum try tipping either of my bikes, they'll find themselves underneath 'em, testing the crash-absorption capabilities of their heads, waiting for the local plod.

"Sorry officer, I heard yelling from outside - must have fallen on the poor little socially-disadvantaged boy. Oh poor him."

I've heard of cow tipping...but bike tipping is a new one (must be the new gen of kids can't find a cow).
"As you sow so shall you reap" This is the Law of Karma."

Yes, i'm sure it started as cow tipping, but i think bikes were easier to find in Winchester city centre and it saved any nasty mud on their "Churches"

Shep

am still asking around the neighbours to see if anyone saw/heard anything... given where and how it was parked, I can't believe it was accidental... if it was tipped or knocked... I still haven't calmed down yet!! :spitfire I'm with you all the way MMC - I shall be impact testing the breaking point of a hoody and friends should I catch them at it ...

oh sh...

hi
shame about your bike , just hope it landed on the persons toe . the alloy cover are good ,dropped my adv 3 years back ,just bent cover .the engine bars are attached to the frame , could bend that ,that would be bad eh . must be a few on the forum that have dropped their bikes ,easy done . with any luck they might have give themselves a hernia pushing it over :rolleyes:check the lever housings to see if any fractures have occurred underneath the bars .

Thanks for the tip about checking under the lever housings... pick it up from being repaired on Saturday morning, and intend to give it a good look over before I ride it away! :)
