Following on from my thread from 12 months ago I thought I'd give a update on how things were going so here it is:
The First Year
The bike covered 18,900 miles in its first year all for pleasure lived in England and visited Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
The Running Costs
£1,811.00 Fuel
£97.34 600 mile service
£92.67 Rear Tourance @ 5,390 miles
£165.10 6,000 mile service
£47.90 Genuine rear pads
£146.95 Front & rear Tourances @ 11,018 miles
£183.20 12,000 mile service
£46.40 EBC front brake pads @ 14,750 miles (once bitten etc)
£72.85 Rear Tourance @ 15,833 miles
£178.61 18,000 mile service
£2,842.02 Total or 15.04 pence per mile excluding depreciation
The Issues
Rear light assembly due to corrosion and a piss poor design
Pannier adjusting mechanism replaced
Rear disc due to warping (twice)
Front discs due to warping
Front engine cover due to corrosion
Both gearbox input shaft seals due to oil leaks however, I could not see any evidence of the leaking oil
Battery (let me down in Belgium)
Oil consumption
One litre every 10,000 miles ( next to knob all)
The Second Year
This year I did a few less miles only covering 17,300 giving a total mileage thus far of 36,200. Again all this years miles have been for pleasure, the bike has remained resident in England and visited Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia.
The Running Costs
£1,712.70 Fuel
£123.99 Front & rear Tourances @ 22,634 miles
£212.26 24,000 mile service
£95.00 Rear Tourance (expensive as I was desperate!)
£149.07 30,000 mile service
£142.70 Front & rear Tourances @ 32,080 miles
£68.27 Front & rear EBC HH pads @ 32,080 miles
£72.00 36,000 miles service (estimate - just got back off my hols and it's not been done yet but cheaper as I'm going to self service now the bike is out of warranty
£2,575.99 Total or 14.89 pence per mile excluding depreciation
The Issues
I almost made twelve months with no further issues but sadly the final drive gave up the ghost on the English National Rally resulting in my first ever failure to complete a navigational rally
The bike was recovered to Blue Bell who did a top job of fixing the bike.
Oil consumption
This has reduced very slightly, to put this in context I've just done 4,000 miles around Europe and topped up by 300ml (in other words still next to knob all)
The Whole Life Running Costs
I can now include depreciation in the calaculation as I have been given a price of my bike plus £3,000.00 to change for a new 1200 of the same spec. So total costs to date including deprication are as follows:
£2,842.02 - 2006/07 Running Costs
£2,575.99 - 2007/08 Running Costs
£3,000.00 - Depreciation
£8,418.01 - Total or 23.25 pence per mile including depreciation
My Conclusions
I've owned a lot of bikes and over the years my annual mileage has varied from a measly 5,000 upto around 25,000 miles per year and I still feel pretty much the same as I did last year but with some improvement to the reliability stakes so I'll just quote myself:
From a riding point of view I am over the moon, it's a better bike to ride than an 1150 and is a real world all round bike however the warranty issues have been a real pisser. What this bike should have been was the ride of a 1200 with the build quality of an 1150 sadly it lacks in the build quality stakes but I'm happy, it's better than owning a jap bike and still makes me laugh when I pass a power ranger while I'm two up and fully loaded with a weekends worth of camping gear.
I know I've looked at the cost of trading in but all in all I'm happy and will be keeping the 1200 for a few more years yet. I'm now thinking I'd like to see 100,000 miles on it.
Cheers
Dave
