"I was recently offered £725 for the Paris Dakar petrol tank alone and £215 for the now unobtainable rev counter but I declined and they are still on the bike".

I've just read this comment on eBay for the sale of a Paris Dakar conversion of an R100GS. Now I know I must be 'out-of-touch' these days when it comes to the cost of things but to me these prices seem incredible. What do others think?

You can still buy PD tanks new but they are around £1000 unpainted.

Airhead spares are all over the place at the minute, BMW appear to still have some new old stock that seems to be a reasonable price but anything that's new is very expensive and seems to be of dubious quality. I've recently ordered an input shaft for a post 85 bike that cost £95 and now need an early 80's one that is over £175

I assume they are having parts made in China which is never seems to be a good thing.

I really wish that Motobins and especially motorworks would state if the parts are genuine or not. I've ordered gaskets and rubber parts from Motorworks that are next to useless. I've stopped using them unless I really have to.

I'd try ringing Matt at Balderstons first Rob.

It's amazing how many OEM BMW bits Motobins order through Balderstons - so why not cut out the middle man ;)

I order all the bits for my R80 GS through them now :D

I'll give them a go. I've had a couple of bikes through them over the years and they've been fine the only dodgy bit was the workshop. Don't know if it's still poor but it certainly went though an iffy period a while back.

:D I sold them too cheap:rob
ring around these days/ oem/ or use mwks because of good service before cost:rob
certainly prices on some have gone up a lot.
That pd tank at mwks was less than 700 a couple years ago.:blast

Week before last , i got a few parts from Motorworks , I was shocked at the
prices . Then on further inspection , i noticed they had charged me VAT on
postage ? .. This i cannot figure ..
Today , i was ordering more parts , and i queried the VAt on Postage ,
The responce wasnt the right answer . I got a whole speel about Ireland
being in the EU and unless i had a vat Number , i was eligible for VAT ..
Did any of you UK,ers notice or have you been charged vat on postage.

THE Receipt went like this

X of Amount of spare parts ... £100.00
Postage £20.00

Vat @20% £24.00

Total Due £144.00

Instead of Vat on Just the applicable goods..
Or am i missing something

Last time I checked around, and Bobs BMW was cheaper than the UK vendors, and the US Post Office is cheaper and faster than Parcelfarce.

One click Paypal ordering direct from the BMW fiche was just a bonus.

You're always charged VAT on postage , at least I am :nenau

VAT on postage and packing.
This is a 'service' offered by the vendor and as such forms part of their business. So if they are VAT registered, VAT has to be applied to the cost of that supplied 'service'.

When I have bought stuff from MW, I get a VAT return form. Ship parts out of the EEC in my suitcase and bring'em back next trip. So claim money back, sometimes even just the cost of a bag of crisps.
