Hi everybody,

I am in need of some honest advice.

my R1150R started making a really nasty noise. Worse than the sewing-machine valve related noise.
Took it to the mechanic and he is telling me it's game over. Before I come to terms with the honest truth, I wanted a second opinion.

Apparently, some plastic protector of the cam chain (forgive my lack of technicality here) has broken inside the engine and bits have come lose. Probably the spring in the LH cam tensioner and maybe other bits. This, in turn, may have ended up in the left cylinder, damaging the piston.

So, he is telling me that the repair in itself is not too bad, a few bits and bobs that would not cost too much. Use the time to replace a few seals. HOWEVER, to do the job, the whole bike needs to come apart, as the frame is the engine. That means £700 of labour to take it apart, and another £700 to put it back. Plus the repair itself. So roughly £2k. This, I must say, is not the official dealer.
Fitting a replacement engine is Russian roulette and to get something with 6 months guarantee I am looking at £700/800.

He is offering me £400 for it.

I can see engines on eBay for £500 and less and I am getting the impression that he will take it apart and put it back on the road for a lot less.

The bike is a 2003 R1150R with 27000 miles, so it has a lot of life in it. But in all honesty for £3k I could get one in better shape than mine. And my biggest issue is that the Mrs has been badgering me for the past 6 years (since we had our son) to give up bikes, the danger of it, blah. So £2k worth of repair won't fly.

So, in short. Shall I find another mechanic or take the £400 and cry?

Thanks
R

Speak to Motobins or Motorworks what they would pay for it. Strip it down and sell individual parts on eBay.
With some spanner knowledge, remove the cylinder head and barrel to see the extent of the damage. Help is always available in various ways on this site.

Run it past Steptoe.

Broken up cam chain tensioner can be replaced without dismantling the bike completely.

Sounds like the cam chain plastic guide may have snapped. Not sure about the spring getting into the engine though. If it is the guide I believe it can be repaired without splitting the engine- there is a thread on this forum (and also an alternative method on YouTube). So all may not be lost.....

It would be well worth contacting Steptoe of this parish. He has found a technique to change the plastic cam chain guides (if this is the actual problem) without splitting the engine. He's based in London too. Sounds like your mechanic is trying to pull a fast one to be honest.

Thanks all for the advice. To be honest my mechanic has been really good and honest to date. He has saved me wads of cash compared to the dealership. I am just guessing it's a way to say he does not really want the job.

I would experiment myself, even without a lot of grease-in-my-hands experience I am not scared of some diy but without a garage or proper tools I can't realistically start pulling bits out and leaving them on the kerb while I look at a video.

I have sent a note to motorworks for scrappage just in case and will contact steptoe, see if there is something we can work out.

Otherwise it is pushbike for me from now on.

Thanks again

Sorry for the "shark" posting. I could be interested in buying it off you (if you are up for it). I'm in London too.
Do you have any pics of the bike?

thanks

pics attached. there is a dent on the tank, just on the front-left tip, you can see it in the picture.
The plastic protector of the radiator is in place but one of the clips is broken. The rest of the bike is in a normal condition for a bike that age.

I have a couple of panniers (original) and a tank bag.

(I am hoping this is appropriate, otherwise let me know and I will remove this and list the bike for sale elsewhere or respond privately)

Oh – yeah. I forgot we're not in the sales section! Sorry mods!

I second the others, ask Steptoe as well (you never know). In case the response is negative, let me know.

Yes it can be fixed and for less than your "mechanic" is offering to buy it for :D.

Replied to your PM
