As per title, this has less to do with my Navigator VI's well-known 'quirks', and more to do with the practicalities of letting go of it.
Specific questions I'm interested in hearing individual answers to:
  1. With this thing being so unreliable that it's basically unusable, what are my chances of selling it? (Garmin SA have made clear that this is BMW Motorrad SA's baby, not theirs, and BMWMSA have made clear to me they won't touch it, either. I don't have sales documentation for it as I got it with a second-hand bike. So I'm pretty much on my own here.)
  2. If it's considered acceptable to sell it, who could be expected to take it, for what purpose, and how much would be considered a fair price?

Personally Nick, I’d cut my losses and bin it, rather than risk the reputational damage to yourself of selling it on. Shame neither of them took ownership of the problems, but at the end of the day a prospective purchaser wouldn’t be buying from them, it would be you they looked to. No offence intended, just my thoughts.

I think if you sell it cheap and the buyer accepts the risk and thats why its cheap then there should be no problem.

I have a Nav6 and it runs flawless, when i started reading this post i though it was a scenario i have.
Which is, do i replace a perfectly working Nav6 for a Chinese android auto system that everyone seems to have these days.
I use to have best of both with my phone also mounted on a wireless charger.
I changed my phone and wasn't thinking, i bought a Samsung Z fold for which there is no mount/case for... so essentially ive lost access to google maps and MRA on the move.

I would sell and just be upfront about it.

It's a good question OP. When I see a Nav VI advertised I think the ad should be prefixed with:

"Does anyone want to buy this useless POS from me"

Strange that Garmin are(were) replacing them f.o.c. in the UK but not in SA 🤔

Whether it's a POS depends on just one thing - whether or not it's got the latest CAP screen. I had three earlier versions (all replaced FOC by Garmin) that had the ghosting problem. The latest, CAP screen one is now just over two years old and has been faultless. It remains my nav device of choice.

I have a 6 its been used about 3 times in anger,

its charged and in its box most of the time, its the fallback unit if the tabnav dies

if it goes tits up hey ho 'll buy something else

I wonder how would you know if you had latest CAP screen?

…. you can identify a Cap Touch Nav VI by verifying its specific version via Garmin Express

As most bods by now will have taken advantage of Garmin’s replacement of duff Nav VI’s with CAP screen versions, the chances are the seller will know if they are holding a duff or exchanged device.

Different consumer protection laws is my best guess. BMW South Africa have a bad reputation for this kind of thing.

I'm currently trying to get joy from them one last time before I start playing hardball. So far, they've been giving me the runaround. Assigned customer service agent unavailable when I phone, not responding to E-mails, etc. We'll see.
If they try shafting me on this, they may win. But they won't walk away without knowing they've been in a fight.

The hardware version on the “About” screen reveals all
I'm curious - what part of the hardware version code would denote a new capacitive screen?
My hardware version number is V7 SA3 4GB 128MB Mo PR BN.

The V number. IIRC the CAP screen version is V9.

I had the exact same dilemma a couple of months back and just binned it in the end.

Hi
Dont bin it offer it in the Free Stuff section with the recipient to pay postage and make a suitable unspecified donation to the charity of your choice.

It will reduce electronic waste and give someone fun

Not Here, Not this device -- I have offered this with things in the past and people seem OK to take a chance of some wasted time.

I've been the recipient of used hardware (junk) and treat it like my wife does when she buys a book, read it and throw it away or give it to charity.

Interesting thread.
My Garmin 6 was replaced last year FOC and very quickly after some awful "ghosting" issues and the new one has been fine. Clearly I am out of the loop.
I see a LOT of riders using their mobiles in secure mounts / locks. Is this the way forward then ? Or are their other "better" sat navs out there now ?

PS ... and sod all to do with this but just back from a 5 day trip to Luxembourg ( I shall do a trip report worry not ) with the Garmin 6 AND the 3 of us using CARDO comms ... brilliant ! Changed the vibe of the whole trip.

I have a nav 6 but replaced in ‘24 after the ghosting issue. This has now been used for 3 years with no problems whatsoever 👍

I did the exact same thing. Initially thinking this must be worth something but reconsidering as when it inevitably failed again, it would not sit well with me. Into the bin.
