The Great Escape (and added attractions)

Eastwards and I'm ashamed to say a little autobahn later time for coffee in the lovely town of Soest.

Back in the cold war days we most certainly did not fly out of here and recreate the dambusters flight profiles, it was banned so we 100pc didn't do it

I can promise you that even in a modern aircraft with Radar Altimeters, Night Vision Goggles and Thermal Imaging Weapon Sights, that flying those profiles at night was not easy.

Put yourself in an old aircraft without Radalt, TI, or NVG and add in hundreds of irate people shooting at you and you begin to realise what a feat of aviation it was. Plus with the attack profile basically involving one flying straight and level!!!........ you're a perfect target.

Thankfully the anti aircraft guys on duty that night appear to have been trained by Stevie Wonder...............

I visited 617 few years ago when it was a GR4 Tornado Squadron, and the spirit of excellence was very much still alive.

Impressive stuff.

Onwards to the Harz....

If you've not been then the Harz mountains (big hills really), in Germany are well worth a visit. It was split by the old border which you can still see now.

The town of Goslar is beautiful and where I stayed the night.

Got pissed on biblical style for last 90 mins. Happily the guest house was great. Owner let me use garage so all good.

Out for a walk round and grab a quick meal.

Plan tomorrow is to hack east to Poland and stay somewhere within striking distance of the Great Escape compound.

I'm very much looking forward to that. And it's my birthday and the weather should be good.

Back of the net all round...

Great stuff :thumb

Hope the recovery is going well and it's a good and full one :beerjug:

Goslar is a great base to explore round the Harz.

The roads are like one huge Hockenheim Ring and normally quiet.

Certainly worth a 2 night stay I'd say.

The market square is v chocolate box like, and has some v classy eateries if that's your thing.

Being the peasant I am, I opted for a bit of pizza and coffee just off the square.

A nice hours walk round town and bed....

Longish day miles wise. A good blast through the Harz and ended up at Zary Poland in hotel Jankow.

Decent place and secure garage used free so result

Wedding on in hotel so blagged some free food.

Walk into town. As with a lot of eastern bloc places I've been to, the ancient centres are usually lovely, then the outer rings of the towns are hideous 'efficiently built' commie carbunkles.

Sure enough it looks rough as a badgers arse until I get to the town square.

As it's my birthday I have a rare beer and top up on food.

Dirt cheap and lovely place to sit out.

Back to crash out and happy to be anticipating a great day at the actual Great Escape Camp. A long held dream......

After a bit of a clusterfuck (hotel lost remote to garage door), headed out on the short trip to Zagan.

The site is spread out a bit.

First port of call the main museum bit.

Safe parking right outside and they let me use a spare office to lib my kit in and get changed.

The museum itself is basically a one room affair but its interesting none the less.

The real attractions lay outside......

A team from the armed forces recently rebuilt a hut from the camp which you walk through.

Different rooms contain various bits and Bob's you'll recognise from the film..... .

The real entrance to Harry.

I'm not too much of a soft smack but visiting the actual spot where they got in and then emerged made me feel I was really standing on hallowed ground. Immersed in legend indeed.....

A short ride down track and you come to the resting place of some of the "50"

I know were all mates now but there were some heavy duty cocksuckers in the Wermacht in those days........
