…… happy to invite you all over to The Hague for good Indonesian cuisine (dutch equivalent of curry) and a few beers at local.... But that a bit beyond the Oyster card travel limit.......

=========

This post and thread has been cut from the 2025 ‘London meet-up’ sub-section, to stand on its own.

I have stuck the post and thread.

Richard

Those interested should contact Grant directly, please. See post #26.

you know, that’s not the worst idea in the world… 3 1/2 hours from Calais.

An away fixture, as it were.

Why not, indeed,

Cheap but slow by coach.

Fast but more pricey by plane, train, bike or car. I can take one by car, if someone wants to meet me in E1 and have a lift, sharing the cost.

PS If this is a real proposal, let’s see how it can be done; not least a definite date, if it’s not to be mid-week. I’m up for it.

It was tongue in cheek of course but if there are those that are interested I”d be more than happy ro set something up this side.
Dates, to be decided but a Friday or Saturday would probably fit the best considering work etc.
If you dont want to lose time the overnight ferry is an option. If more than 1 to a car makes it cheaper. There are things to see in The Hague… for the motor enthusiasts theres the Louwman museum
Beach at scheveningen is lovely in the summer.
I can arrange restaurant - Indonesian food is great and typically Dutch.. beers can be in my local. Small but quirky bar in town with the best Guinness on draught in The Netherlands so they say.
Alternatively we find somewhere near the beach or in town. Whatever the preference is.
Suggestion for dates? June or early July
Hotels I’d have to leave to others as i have no clue…there are some big chains here alternatively small boutique places are abound.
Let me know and we can plan

Suggest i do the planning over here and you appoint someone to do the logistics of getting here and staying somewhere

Sounds like an interesting plan

On a completely different idea we could combine with a weekend bike trip to the Eifel which is just 3 hours ride from The Hague. Here i must confess to having lots of experience as we ride there about 3 times every year

A few nice pubs or bars as they are called here lined up and a good Indo. All within walking distance. Once we get a few more reactions and dates I’ll post details

I’d be up for this as a one-off fixture, making it a ‘Dash kind of thing’.

My personal preference would be:

Go over on Friday morning by Chunnel at around 10:30 UK time by car.

Off the train just after midday French time.

Go direct to The Hague, arriving at around 16:00 and into the hotel.

Out for some beers, simple burger something like that.

Saturday, mooch about The Hague / go somewhere. Out for dinner in the evening at place Grant suggested earlier in the thread.

Sunday, leave hotel at around 09:00 for a Chunnel train at around 13:30.

Date…… How about July or early to mid October?

========

The Hague is not short of hotels, though July is holiday season, so maybe booking early’ish…. But that requires a date and / or agreement on what the plan is. October is, I guess, less busy….. but still requires a date.

Grant how interesting is that jigsaw-like coastline between Calais and the Hague? It looks interesting.. but so did the west coast of Denmark..

I’d be thinking of a chunnel at sparrow’s, then a cruise up that coast for a meet up early Saturday afternoon. Agree with Waps, later in the year is better for me, June is rammed.

The bit between Calais and the border with Holland is nothing special. A lot of busy Belgian seaside towns but nothing interesting. Calais itself is pretty grim in my opinion and the smaller seaside roads will be stop start tourist traffic all the way. The trip from NL Border up to Rotterdam is OK passing over the various islands and famous water management locks. Also one of the longest tunnels in Europe. 6km
I´d head a bit inland from Calais then north. Takes about 4 hours
This might help as idea

Richard, if you want to do a long weekend then suggestion would be to go out on the Friday evening for dinner and beers at the places I can suggest. This leaves the rest of weekend free to do other things. The Hague is a lovely town to just walk around and see the sights or you can go up to the beach and explore. Its a lovely promenade from port to the pier. Then up to you if you wish to tag on another night and do your own thing or some might want to simply drive back home.

If its just going to be a Saturday evening for most making it just a weekend then indeed Saturday is perfect as well.

Ferry is also an option albeit more expensive.
Just let me know and I´ll post some ideas on dinner and bars later..

As to date can i suggest September?

dinner location would be this place I have eaten here before and its pretty good Indonesian food. All places are in the Northern part of the city.
Have look at google maps to get an idea of the locations and what the places look like.

For bars, very close buy is this place right on the canal which is quite famous. Cafe de Hathor

My local is the Cafe De Mallemeid which we can also walk to for the later beers. No website and pretty tiny but a great place

I’d be perfectly happy jumping on a Eurostar rapid train in London, hopping off in Rotterdam and catching a local train to The Hague. Not much over four hours, plus a smidge over 40 minutes for me to get to St Pancras.

Flying works well, too.

I selfishly only suggested dates that suit me.

It’s your gig, suggest dates.

:beerjug:

I’m easy. September is probably better for weather say mid to late or so but I will go with what others decide. Just let me know and I’ll set things up my end.
As you guys will be traveling best if you decide and let me know. I will adjust my commute accordingly

If you book far enough in advance flights from City to Rotterdam can work out to be around £150 or so return.

And if anyone wants to sample “Hollands finest” there are plenty of good “koffieshops” all over. I’d need to ask my youngest who knows a bit more than me🤣🤣🤣:spl1f::spl1f::spl1f:
