the horn !!

Hi Bryn, what do you mean by two tone, like a police siren or is it loud then louder one it kicks off, is the noise not instant? Or do you keep on the original horn aswell? Would I need a relay or just change the connections? Sorry bout the questions!! I have been looking at getting a decent horn and fleabay seems to have plenty stebels!
Cheers....

Stevie, if you piggyback into the wiring feeding the original horn, you are in effect using two horns, the Stebel Magnum and the standard OEM unit at the same time, each has a tone of its own, and you'll hear both at the same time when you operate the horn button.... if you stick with the Magnum ( not the Nautilus) and do this you won't need a relay:thumb

So was/am I mate. It's dead straight forward. Get yourself down to Halfords and get some scotch clips (think thats them). Means you dont have to cut your wires at all - just splice a couple of extension leads onto the existing lead and add the spade connectors that come with the horn from NN. You can then keep the existing horn installed - hence the two-tone comments ie both horns sounding at the same time ?

Hope your horn lasts longer than the three I had........gave up in the end and put original back on.

that sounds a great idea , anyone else done it like that ??
are the wire connectors waterproof ?? and do they damage the wire if i need to return to stock ??
thanx

Scotchlock connectors.....

are great for inside a car or dry engine bay but as they rely on breaking the insulation to create a connection they do leave the join open to the ingress of water etc, best to cut/solder heatshrink or if you do want to use Scotchlocks then put them inside a waterproof box.

As an alternative you could fit the twin horns off a 2005 or earlier RT if you know how as they are well loud ( I don't btw)
Has anyone done it :nenau

Got the horn!!

Well I bought a new horn, Stebel magnum from ebay, delivered in two days, £9.95 delivered, substantially cheaper than swiftysimons, brand new in packet. Took old horn off, after much offering up of new horn, looking for alternative places to sight them both decided in the end just to do straight swap, so new on for old, scotch locked wires with vaseline inside the connector to help against corrosion, black taped, then shrink wrapped the hole lot, connected it up and pressed the horn and EEK its loud in my wee shed!!
Thanks to Bryn and others for advice, there comments on here made me kick my ass into gear and do the swap, glad I did. Cheers.

I know my horn works

when I test it once a year for MOT.

Otherwise, it is my belief that if you have time to reach for a horn button you have time to brake.
It could be useful, though, for showing your displeasure at a discorteous motorist, though I prefer to gesture that their penis is growing out of their forehead. I.E. Dickhead, & your balls are hanging in your eyes!

That presumes the horn is only there to be used once things are all going wrong, as opposed to a warning instrument e.g. blind left turn under a railway line - sound the horn, it says "I'm here"; it's an audible warning, no more, no less.

I probably use my horn once a week and would certainly hover my thumb over it once or twice a ride. If there's a car waiting in a side road and they're looking the other way I'll often give 'em a little beep to get their attention, followed by a thumbs up. More often than not I get a wave back saying 'thanks for letting me know yer coming ..'. :thumb

I've been riding a very long time, I cannot recall the last time I used a horn.

PS my memory's good :rob

the horn

All in all i think its taken me about 2 weeks and 20 minutes to fit this horn , 2 weeks thinking about it 20 minutes to actually fit it ,
I have to say imho i that Im pleased with the result ,
like all the threads suggest its really not that difficult to fit , even for a muppet like me ,
I went down the cable connector route (scotchblocks) , this way you dont lose the original block connector , take the old one off put the new one in its place ,
the sound of the magnum is i would say about the same as a car horn , but because its open it does sound louder which is a vast difference from stock ,

would I recommend ??
YES !!!!!!! :thumb2

quick tip though , the scotch blocks ar'nt waterproof so I used nearly a full roll of 'tricians tape ,
I'm goin for a big ride on saturday so we'll see how it stands up :augie
ps nearly a tenner on fleabay , the other bits from halfrauds
