Where do you get you're ill informed information from ? The CAN bus system has absolutely NOTHING to do with your battery going faulty after two years. The CAN bus is a pair of wires that sends information between units on the bike and there have been NO documented faults that I have read.

The later bikes now have Exide batteries - this may be a clue to battery failures. :nenau

Why does "Optimate" feature so often in threads about dead batteries ?

Good question. I know I am tempting fate here but my bike sits outside; I've never used an Optimate and I've never had a flat battery though my 1150's did start to get a bit tired after 4 years or so.

Course it has. It's one of those new fangled farkle things so it must be the cause of all problems (including running out of petrol). :)

Forgive me if I am wrong but I dont think the Optimate is any good for the odyssey battery. I got mine from motorworks and was told my optimate would be no good, so I bought the Ctek multi XS800 battery charger from them which seems to work fine.

I suspect Motorworks would recommend the Ctek as they sell them but fail to see any reason why the Optimate wouldn't be suitable as they work on the same principle, if I'm wrong please advise as I have my Oddyssey on an Optimate & don't want to screw £95.00 squids worth of battery.

Because they work!

My 1150GS (which doesn't get ridden nearly as much as it should) is still on its original battery which is 8½ years old. The battery still starts the bike without an issue but is connected to an Optimate at ALL times when it is in my garage at home.

I use an optimate.
I replaced the oe Honda battery on my 1998 CBR600 last month.
The bike's done 13,000 miles in 10 years.
On the base of the battery was stamped 06/96.

Greg, Doc:
Good results for battery life, for sure.
I wonder if Optimate works well when compensating only for self-discharge in battery, but not so well when keeping battery alive on the load from the alarm or similar?
??

I have the voltage algorithm for Optimate somewhere - if I can find it I'll post it later.

What I don't know is how much current they are capable of producing whilst maintaining the voltage. Certainly they will cover stuff like clocks and, on my DR-Z, it covers the step-down voltage unit for my 3v Garmin Geko (the unit would normally plug into a cigarette lighter, but I have it hard-wired and permanently live).

But it seems to me that alarms give nothing but trouble. Over the years this forum has had thread after thread with people suffering flat batteries; the cause usually associated with an alarm. 1200GSs seem particularly vulnerable in this respect. I also think that alarms don't do much for bike security. Most people ignore them. More trouble than they are worth!

These battery's are crap, but mr :ronno BMW can probably buy them for a pound cheaper then better ones...

HORIZONTALLY OPPOSED - I dont know the answer to your question, maybe your right and I have beed done over (again) haha but they did tell me that the Optimate was no good for my oddyssey bat. I would give them a quick call and ask for an explanation at least then you will know for sure. Motorworks gargon found at link below:

Probably not done over unless you already had an Optimate or similar, as I identified in my earlier post the spec & operation for most of these items including the Ctek look very similar, the Optimate does specify gel batteries in the can do's in the bumph.
