I have searched the threads and cant find any reference to this one.

My display has started to be rather dim and looks like all the pixels are not firing at startup. It then after 5 mins it gets back to normal.

I have seen other LCD displays, like calculators, being reluctant to work when cold but it is now the warmest since I have owned the bike:nono

Any suggestions?

I think there's a light sensor in the display unit which sets the brightness or contrast (or both?) of the LCD display. Did you start off in bright sunlight? Or perhaps the sensor window is mucky - take a close look at the panel, I think you'll find a small circular window on there which I've assumed is the sensor.

The sensor only controls the clock and LCD panel lights on mine ('05 model).

There has been a problem reported of this problem occuring at very high temps - sounds to me like there is a fault with the display :nenau

I found that on my 05 GS last summer, heading north on French autoroutes with the sun on the display coupled with high temps, 35c, the display faded to almost nothing. After filling up at petrol stations it would recover but then start to fade again. The dealer stated that this was a problem that they had heard of before, and may be able to change it under warrenty. I chopped it in for a GSA late last year so did'nt get chance to change it. Interestingly the GSA display is the same style, so I waite and see if the same thing happens this summer!

Your display is defect. Get a new one under warrenty! Settings can be transfered (don't let them tell you it can't)

How I know? Bin there, done that.... :eek

Ah well ex-cruise-me that assumes it is still under warranty... expired in December.:(

I did manage to get my rusty engine cover replaced just outside of warranty as a "courtesy".

Not sure I will have any luck with this.

What happened to the display over time. Did it give up quickly or was it sporadic? Did it die completely?

LCD's certainly used to have a limited operating temperature range and the contrast would change dramatically as the temperature varied.

To overcome this inherent problem a temperature compensating drive circuit was often used in an attempt to maintain visibility over a wide operating range.

I'm not certain about the latest LCD's but for automotive use it is possible that they still require temperature compensation - if so then it might be that this is the bit that is not working correctly. Either way it sounds like the display needs to be replaced.

@Bigalmac

That's shyte indeed. I got several out of warranty issues going on at this very moment too. Hope the can claim it still..

My problem was not so much a problem, but weird, and not well functioning. At high temps last year (just within warrenty) the LCD started to flow on startup. It settled after a few minutes. But this was enough for the rep to change it.
I now have a different (later model) LCD that allmost looks the same, but has thinner lcd lines. So somewere BMW has changed this unit manufacuter!
