Low voltage (below 9.5v) will cause it but if you bike still starts and runs it is most probably a loose plug into the instruments

This looks like a very good starter for ten, but as always a bit more info on your bike/year/mileage would help - you are still showing as being the owner of an 1100GS for example.
May also lead into the dreaded Reg/rec problems, but don't get ahead of the problem too quickly.

sorry f650gs se 2012 57,000 miles stator and rec replaced within last 12 months

Get yourself a voltmeter and attach it to the canbus plug near the key. I have had 2 stator failures so bought a cheap waterproof LCD display that I have mounted on the handlebars to monitor what is going on.

Attaching it to the CANBUS will not record the amps from the stator but will show you the charge in the system. It will stay on for about 1 minute after the bike is turned off and they quickly wind down to 0.

14.5v - bike running, no accessories on
13.9v - bike running with fan on
13.1v - as the bike is turned off
12.4v - 12.6v - before the bike is started. I believe the is the most a battery will hold so is a good indication of a failed/failing battery. the lower reading happens on colder days.
9.5v - and below. Instruments cut out and ABS is deactivated. Bike still runs but anxiety levels increase

I fitted the voltmeter when I thought the 2nd stator was going. Some days it would charge well and others the battery would just start to drain. Ideally you would want to record the stator output but this is impractical when you are riding.

Cheers

Alex
