The Motorcyclist's Guide to Scotland book - J.G. Fergusson

I was in touch with JF recently as the book is no longer available on Amazon. John very kindly offered to send me one from a dwindling pile in his garage. No charge either as it was to be a prize offered by my IAM group in a competition.

The good news though is that he's working on a second edition. An even better version should be available again quite soon. :thumb

that's great news Pete. Book I found really good as did others here so a version 2 would be good. Take it it will have new routes and ideas?

cheers!

The Motorcyclist's Guide to Scotland - 2nd Edition now available.
had a message from John Fergusson today, informing me that the new edition arrived on his doorstep today, so to assist have a heads up.
It is broadly the same content as Edition 1 but with new illustrations and four new routes: Kirkcudbrightshire, Perthshire, Fife and Royal Deeside I am informed.
Not sure where they will be sold, Amazon possibly, so keep your eyes peeled.

Crikey, it seems like an age ago, deep in Covid’s lockdown, that I cut all the first book’s routes into BaseCamp. That was about the last time I used my Mac and / or Garmin’s BaseCamp.

Given the ability of something like Kurviger to host third party routes and allocate each a unique tour code, it would be a pity if the author did not make use of it. The Germans in particular are much more savvy when it comes to sharing routes in their publications.

I've a number of them loaded onto my XT2 for trips north, thank you for your service!

I have also utilised the files supplied from Wapping and loaded them into the sat nav.
Nothing like having a book in hand though.

After a week's cage fighting with Amazon's support staff, I've at last got the new book listed - only three years after I thought: "It's about time I updated that book again". I hope it's disappointing news for the scoundrels trying to flog over priced, second hand copies on the internet (highest I've seen is £209).
Anyhow - the refreshed, revised and updated version of The Motorcyclist's Guide to Scotland is now available, either via Amazon (search for "1999635728" if the title doesn't work), or by contacting the publisher direct (i.e. me) - it comes to the same thing in the end anyway. .

Honestly? I'd like people to buy the new one, but if you've got the old version, it'll still work fine for the routes and maps - it's just the other info which is a bit tired these days. And, as Gimlet said above, the new one has got additional routes covering Kirkcudbrightshire, Perthshire, Fife and Deeside. And I'm working my way through the routes to compile gpx files, available in due course.

Thanks for your interest in the book. This forum gave me great encouragement (and a welcome sales boost) when the book first came out. I'm still grateful for that.
Thanks guys.

For what it’s worth, several of the German ‘touring’ magazines use Kurviger to ‘host’ the GPX files for their routes.

Kurviger will generate a ‘Tour code’ for each, which the reader copies and pastes in Kurviger and the route pops up. It seems to work well.

One possible other suggestion is to create the GPX routes as ‘Tracks’ and not ‘Routes’. On the whole ‘Tracks’ are more stable than ‘Routes’ and are less prone to the vagaries of closed roads and the like.

Best wishes for the new edition!

Any thoughts on Ireland?

Received my copy today, appreciatively signed inside the front cover. 👍
An excellent tome, well worth the money and a credit to the author.

Will be using this during the coming year.

Algorithms!

If you want a copy of the new edition, email Jon at the address I posted above. He'll flog one to you direc t via a BACS payment. It'll be cheaper than Amazon (postage) and definitely MUCH cheaper than the Amazon price for the first edition!
