yep, I always give a sideways tilt head nod, most bikers do in my experience, some don't, but then I don't when things is demanding attention !!
Much more friendly on the continent - french riders especially, but they are bloody nutters as Blackal said, they still find the time to give a hangin off the handelbars 2 finger salute when scratching the tarmac of an alpine road !! also don't forget the foot dip when passing to say hi to a biker or thanks to anyone !

Incidentally was following a french registered car (in UK) a couple of days ago and he was driving right over to the left to let me past, but wasn't worth it in the heavy traffic - but it shows how much more the french are aware of bikers than the comatose british idiots who don't know how to use indicators, mirrors, eyes, junctions, roundabouts, etc.

The hand waving whilst cranked over comes naturally cos it's your left hand, can't get on with the foot dip though

And yes most cars get out the way when you come up behind them which is nice

What's wrong with being friendly. In times gone by people doffed their hats as a sign of respect to people they passed that they didn't know. As do many other cultures have their greetings for people they don't know.

Each to their own I suppose. I was filtering this morning and a car in front of me made a concerted effort to move over to the right, I passed him and then lifted my right leg off the peg to say thank you. Another rider behind me slipped through as well but no thank was given to the car driver. At the next lights I mentioned to the rider of the other bike that he should say thanks, this is why people give us space. If he doesn't he pisses off the car drivers and everyone suffers from this.

I always give a little nod to learners, those on scooters, in fact anyone of two wheels....not in an arrogant 'you're lucky to be noticed by a BMW rider' kind of way though, more of a fair play to you for being on a bike type thing.

Not relevant to nodding or not though is it ? I always acknowledge someone moving out the way or helping out.

I have been riding a BMW for the past 12 years and jap fours since 1989 and I have always found that the worst riders for not acknowledging a nod/wave tend to be riding a BMW, with GS riders probably being the worst offenders, I give every rider a nod no matter what they are riding, it gives me a warm glow inside knowing how good they must feel after a BMW rider acknowledged them. Sorry.

I always acknowledge other riders. Anything with two wheels and a motor. A nod if they are coming towards me or left handed acknowledgement or leg off if I'm passing them or they're passing me.
Doesn't always get reciprocated, but no problem.
Wouldn't dream of doing it when out in my car, but then car drivers don't generally speak when they happen upon another car driver, but motorcyclists seem to always pass the time of day.
Long may it continue. Especially as in the U.K. We are generally looked down on by other road users. Thank god for the continent and their enlightened/enthusiastic embrace of two wheeled culture.
