The Nod!

:yelrotflm I needed that after a long day!

May have just been an off day, more bikes out this week and everyone seems to be greeting

That has a different meaning north of the border

I tend to give a nod , or a thumbs up to other riders, even when driving the truck. If they are loaded up , off on their jollys, and i'am sat in the rig , sweating my knackers off, my first thoughts are always, lucky fucker, nice one, so yeh; when they come past , i give them the thumbs up.

When I started riding it was on a scooter and I was very happy to not only get a nod, but a chat at the traffics lights.
From that point on I nod and chat to anyone.

I agree it's more common for Al bikes in Europe but the hand wave it easier driving on the right.

But the hierarchy of who waves at who is in all cliques.
I've always driven old VWs and we wave at each other, however new modern VWs don't, unless they see and old dub, it makes their day when you then wake back. :)

Be happy make someones day.

I do nod at all riders of all makes/types, when I can. At times, especially on the motorways I find myself acknowledging a little late in reaction by the time the other rider would have passed me off. Even though I do nod, do not think they can make out as my nod in a hurry may not appear to be a proper nod - blame the lord for my small neck - so when I dont get a nod back, I pass on the benefit of doubt...... all happy, even if they didnt intend to nod back - still happy! :D

I nod when I start a ride but tend to stop after 4-5 unreciprocated nods. A nod reminds me I belong. It's a small and shrinking club and belonging matters to me

I only wave at dogs.

I agree belonging feels good.

On my way home last night I pulled into Aldi car park to pick up some of their cheap 'biking base layers' sales now on folks. I was met by this other biker, lid in one hand and new gear in the other. He had the biggest smile I've seen for ages. He'd just passed his bike test and I was the first chap on a bike he'd met. You could just see that he was buzzing with it. Test passed, new gear, talking bike stuff and feeling like he'd joined 'the club'.
Not really a nod story I know but it's two wheeled camaraderie....

yep, I always give a sideways tilt head nod, most bikers do in my experience, some don't, but then I don't when things is demanding attention !!;)
Much more friendly on the continent - french riders especially, but they are bloody nutters as Blackal said, they still find the time to give a hangin off the handelbars 2 finger salute when scratching the tarmac of an alpine road !! also don't forget the foot dip when passing to say hi to a biker or thanks to anyone !
I know its a bit silly but hey whats wrong with a bit of friendly courtesy !!:clap
Incidentally was following a french registered car (in UK) a couple of days ago and he was driving right over to the left to let me past, but wasn't worth it in the heavy traffic - but it shows how much more the french are aware of bikers than the comatose british idiots who don't know how to use indicators, mirrors, eyes, junctions, roundabouts, etc.
Never understand why the " the foot dip " has never really took off over here !

I have been riding a BMW for the past 12 years and jap fours since 1989 and I have always found that the worst riders for not acknowledging a nod/wave tend to be riding a BMW, with GS riders probably being the worst offenders, I give every rider a nod no matter what they are riding, it gives me a warm glow inside knowing how good they must feel after a BMW rider acknowledged them:barf. Sorry.

I am with you on this one Al. What youngsters have to do to get a motorcycle licence is unbelievable so they get my respect. All I had to do was fit L plates to a 250cc or under and taking my test meant riding around the block and making sure I did not run over the examiner when he stepped into the road for my emergency stop.

Because in blighty you can wave with your left hand to say thanks as you pass

In France you pass on the left so it's your throttle hand on the inside, hence the foot dip instead

I avoid it as it unbalances you on the bike, especially at speed with the wind, don't like it at all

Great story Clive. He is the future of biking.

Glad to see that most people still believe in the Nod. My daughter has also been reading the thread and she agrees that it is a special thing and next time she goes out with me she will nod and if she gets no response, she is going to give them a wave to piss them off!

I always nod, sometimes I salute if they're on the same bike (GSA LC), LOL. Very few bikers I pass fail to nod, or wave as is more common on the continent... almost all the bikers I meet acknowledge each other in some way in my experience. I like it, it'll be a shame if we stop doing it.

same here...

I own 3 bikes, a BMW a Yamaha and a Lambretta, I have to say that I get far less nods from bikers when I'm on the Lambretta than on the other two, yet I'm the same person, on two wheels and subject to the same dick head car drivers. I've never understood the difference. Fair play to the nodders who nod to everyone.

Everybody, except scooters Andy ;) been out on Dartmoor today, loads of biker mates out to play, only 3 bikes ignored my nod to them, two GS's and a guy with his knee down on a bend so I will give him a let off this time:)

no way am I going to nod to uberoo riders...fucking twats on a death wish with 2 hours CBT training in foreign! I nod at al other bikers, often across a dual carriage way too! Standing joke between me and the Mrs is whether the pillion on the way past also waves at us! We usually take bets as we approach....she keeps score. HD riders can just fuck off now though
