Does anyone know what parts of the Ridgeway are still open to us? I know there are a couple of miles open all year to vehicles, where are they exactly?

To be honest very little of The Ridgeway is still open to vehicular traffic as most of it was down graded to Restricted Byway status during NERC :spitfire

The only bit open all year round to traffic is the three miles from The Sheppards Rest to Ridgeway Farm. This stretch comes under the juresdiction of Swindon Borough Council and is even passable in a Porsche. In fact there was a complaint on the Friends of The Ridgeway web-site from a member saying that they had been overtaken by a guy in an Audi TT

RAMBLERS :mcgun

I haven't been up there recently, but I saw a couple of girls up near the Wayland Smithie in an old polo... the Ridgeway just isnt challenging or interesting...

I don't know if they have been down graded to, but there where a lot of tracks going south that where a lot more interesting and had far fewer ramblers on them.

There are still lots of Bye-Ways south of the Ridgeway open around Compton and Lambourn. Get an OS Map sheet 174 (Newbury and Wantage) and have a look. I was riding the bye-ways around Lambourn last week. Watch out for race horses though as the bye-ways tend to be close to a lot of the gallops.
