The Sidestand and the blustery day

So there we were, bikes all parked in a nice diagonal row leaning into the wind, sitting in the cafe enjoying some coffee and cakeage, when in comes a local "Quine" to tell us "Yer bikes ha felt over".

Mine had got blown over by the forecast 55mph gust and had taken the next bike with it. Fortunately there was a big enough gap to the next one to avoid a full on domino effect

As the second GS went over its back wheel must have flipped up and the combination of forces left my topbox and rack lying on the pavement. His bike took a cracked panel from my bars but unfortunately his right engine bar managed to crack the head cover and he lost oil. He reckons it looks like it's not the first time its been over as the rubber bumper was already touching the head.

It a £260 ish bill to get my two month old looking pretty again with a new rack (thanks Cotswold Motorrad ) and I haven't heard from him yet. We were both chatting to motorworks to find good used parts but no luck for me.

So the next time high winds are forecast, I'll be using my centre stand! Every day's a school day.

Is it a Bagger or a Bobber? Either way I don't think it'll catch on.

Ahh yes, the rough tough adventure bike that BMW will have you believe will transport you across a continents roughest roads without a murmer............. falls over while stationary, costs hundreds in repairs and leaks oil...............

Bad luck - shit happens, but I don't think the centre stand will save you from a 55mph gust.

Still, to prove you don't even need wind, my FiL managed the same trick in our garage, silly old beggar. Bikes were lighter in the 1940s, when he last rode, so when he jumped on my old CBR1000F tourer & promptly dropped it, he took out all 3 bikes that were neatly parked in a row.

Unfortunate incident but better off leaning bike away from wind on side stand than into it. Also centre stand it will be more likely to blow over as it only has to lean a small amount before it would topple. Tarmac is worst for centre stand as the weight of bike makes it sink in. Maybe on level concrete centre stand might be better.

Sorry to hear your tale of woe, but it could have been worse and all the bikes could have been claiming from your insurance if they had dominoed (if that’s an actual word)

Good grief! Talk about an over reaction. Steptoe made a perfectly valid, if somewhat sarky, comment about BMW and their present marketing policies and the bikes they're now producing. (He also has a business servicing a repairing BM bikes and has been doing so for a long, long time. So he knows of what he speaks.) Why go to war over a throw away comment that was meant to be humorous but still with a point? If he'd aimed it at you personally, that would be different.

A "Yeah, I was out of line; bad day;" whatever , is in order.

Shakey its not just big Beemers that go over. My lad had a mint 6 month old Vespa that blew over in the carpark at work. Vespas have mainstands , but I guess the combination of fully faired in rear plus footboards and knee guards acts like a sail. Damage was scratched topbox, scratched fairing trim and a dent in the metal side cases. A real bugger the wind and new bikes.

Ah Big T! A classic mistake! Steptoe is an old hand on here, (61,000 + posts), and he is a well respected contributor and an excellent mechanic and there is nothing he doesn’t know about BMWs, you however are a mere babe in arms with your 105 posts and your sensitivity to friendly banter and astute observations. If you stay on this Forum, then you will come to know and love Steptoe

Hang on a minute. I thought your post was perfectly in tune. I mean if you remember the series (I do and for sure steppers does too ). That banter was precisely what made it!

Steppers is a mainstay asset in here and he chose the best possible name to match his take on it all . He takes what he gives and he shares a LOT of wisdom. He has a sense of humour.

I think you're all taking it far too seriously...
