I was leaning on the bike chatting and it got lower...and lower....and lower. Bent on the top like a banana! How can they get something so simple so wrong!

So I took it off and straightened it in a vice. I then removed the foot and cut a length of 12mm x 12mm square steel rod which fits snugly inside, I cut it short enough to allow the foot to be replaced. I then hammered the rod in and replaced the foot, fixing it with a self tapping screw.

Seems much better now so I will see how long it lasts now !

They all do that sir...:blast My bike's had one under warranty since I bought it and at least one for the previous owner.

if you buy a competion race bike, wich is designed fot low low weight.
then
1- be grateful there is a side stand
2- of course its designed to hold the bike weights, not the 85 kilo's extra
3- if you want to sit while not moving and with no feet on the ground then sit on a chair/ tree trunk, ground, or start practising trial skills.

but i understand its anoying if you sit on the bike and it brakes and all the other KTM yamaha, honda etc riders will say , look its broken allready...

Its a fair point but I have had Yam's and KTM's and you can sit...stand, sleep, jump about and the stand wont break :)

I might actually try and find a KTM stand and engineer it to fit :thumb

Whats all the fuss about, it's only a side stand after all, like Brommer said , it's to support the bike, not bike and rider. whats the use in camparing it with other bikes, if you are going to do that then you should compare everything about the bikes. I just annoys me a bit when we have a thread like this that is just gives negative views about the bike.
i've had two of these bike with no issues with the stand. It's fit for purpose as far as i'm concerned. all the money thats been spent on making a lightweight bike, and hey presto you've sorted the stand problem not mentioning that the stand is not twice as heavy. These are great bikes why dont the people that own them praise them rather than slate them at every oppurtunity ??

i'll get off my soap box now. (the one my bike normally rests on in the garage :-) )

It's not a crap stand it's the person who uses the stand who is crap. :eek The stand is to hold the bike up how easy is that:rob

Well that must be the mechanic at the dealers then because when i went to pick it up from its first service a red faced receptionist said your bike just fell over the stand has bent.

So can you pivot the bike on the stand ,like when lubing the chain or must you use a lift to do that? seems odd ,my exc stand is alloy but pretty strong:nenau

There is no way the stand is fit for purpose or acceptable in any way at all. 2 times mine has snapped and each time caused unnecessary damage to the bike - once on level solid ground, the other on an incline and the stand was bent 180 degrees forward. total utter rubbish.

it is totally unfit for greenlaning. i would say 8 out of 10 gates i come to i need a friend to support my bike when i get off to open the gate as where i live non of the lanes a level and solid ground, so therefore out of the bikes ability to remain standing.

ive had loads of trouble with this bike, been at the dealers for 6 weeks now and to be honest bmw deserve all the bad comments they get in my opinion. the worst £6k im every likely to spend.

i would praise the good points (really struggling to think of any now though) and have done in the past but im really struggling to let the few good points out shine the bad ones now.

I think maybe everyone is getting a bit hot and bothered, lets not get personal, its not like I was saying your wife was bad in bed or the equivalent :toungincheek

So far from the 2 trips I have done the bike seems outstanding, very much underrated and I don't know why its not selling by the bucket load.

But I'm not brand loyal to any bike or manufacturer so if something is wrong I will tell it like it is. All this "its only to rest the bike on or they are saving weight does not cut the cloth with me" I have worked in manufacturing/engineering for the last umpteen years and I think the stand is not fit for purpose and the fact it bent on my second trail ride proves my point.

BMW must have known people would trail ride the bike and therefore people will look at maps on the seat, lean on the bike to eat pasties/drink tea etc. That said it was getting worse even before I finished it off. So it should have been made stronger. Yes my stand is now a few 100 grams heavier but hopefully I will do the job now!

Stand not fit for purpose, poorly designed and manufactured. Mine bent whilst supporting bike. BMW should redesign and recall.

Yup - The stand is not a great engineering success, I was helping another rider pick his bike up when mine went over on the stand, nobody near it at the time, when I checked the top had fractured just below the pivot.

I had one of the first bikes and the stand broke twice. Both times it was just set on the stand no other weight. The engineering required to make a stand that works is not complicated, this side stand felt like an afterthought.
My overall impression is a great concept, love the constant chain tension and not having to adjust the back wheel.Engine is very strong.Support from BMW was excellent.
Downsides was the harsh ride and snatchy efi.

Putting this engine and swinging arm into the husky frame and suspension will I think result in something very special indeed.

If you cant be honest about the good bits and bad bits nothing would change and we would all be driven by a brand and its marketing.I preffer honest feedback that helps push the engineers into innovation and continious development.

Its a good bike but its not perfect,is anything?

Mine is one of the first build 450's and I give the bike a hard time. I have never sat on the bike with the stand down or get on the bike with the stand down. I also never store the bike on the side stand always on a lift stand. You can see by the design of the stand it is made light for holding the bike up only. None of the 450's here have had broken stands and they are all the same make year.

The whole idea of the bike is to be light so parts are made light and may break over time.

Well said Kiwi, my sentiments entirely. i did over 160 hours on my first one, and i tend to ride mine hard, broke 2 Akra's in the process, but that gores with the territory. some people just love to complain about the most trivial things.. ah well each to their own.

Side stand

I have had several side stand on my G450X, still under warranty until september!!!! Seems thay copied this bit from KTM!
