The strong pound.......

When importing a motorcycle, less than 10 years old, in order to register it you will need to provide the following:

Original European Certificate of Conformity (51 point version)
- Original garage evidence that the vehicle meets the United Kingdom national requirements
(UK headlight, dual marked speedometer)
- £100 payment

The relevant application form can be downloaded from the below page.

I bought an imported (from Germany) LHD Audi A6. It was registered in the UK (using the CoC) with a kph only speedo and has been through 6 MOTs in my hands and nobody ever mentioned the KPH speedo.

KPH is fine in the UK AFAIK

To register a new bike in the UK it requires an MPH speedometer.

DVLA will request an engineers report that the MPH speedometer is present together with the correct headlight.

How do I know - I bought an unregistered bike from Germany - DVLA would not entertain registering it until the above info was supplied, together with HMRC notification showing VAT had been paid, and certificate of conformity.

However it seems that if you forge the document then they may not ask - the KPH speedometer is ok for MOT.

Karl " I bought an unregistered bike from Germany" ... well done !

I feel, our affection for these bikes, leaves ut at the hands of an unscrupulous bunch of dealers who simply "milk us" because we love the GS.

I get excited every time I hear of someone enjoying an import.

My experience was entirely the opposite. KPH-only speedo and LHD headlight - never queried when the dealer registered it in UK.

Mysterious.

As I said - if you give false info ( and that is what the dealer did) they may not check.

What about import duty ? I bought my 1200 GS in Spain less 21% iva or vat, saved 21% you would think, as there is no vat in Gib. All well a good. BUT I had to pay import duty of 15% to import it into Gib. Which I knew about , but a saving of only 6%. I would check all the bits and bobs of the paperwork before committing to the purchase.

Even if BMW hedge money forward by a couple of years the exchange should still have a benefit to UK buyers - but they have done nothing to reduce the price or offer any buyer incentives - bunch of robbing dogs I would say!

I think it's commonly known as price fixing but we just seem to grin and bear it.

I bought my 2015 GSA in Spain and it cost more than the equivalent bike in the UK.

However it would have cost a lot more to have bought it in the UK and then imported it to Spain.
