Had a minor little routing problem on the Streetpilot which produced a 1100 mile journey for what was in reality was approximately 160kilometres.

Just going over my route in Mapsource on the PC (shortest route).

Start: Dingle
End: Castlemaine
Real Distance: 46km approx
Mapsource Route Distance: 2844km 2Days and 11 minutes

Recommended Route:

Dingle - Killarney (going through Castlemaine) - Cork - Cashel - Dublin - Holyhead - M6 - M1 - Dover - Channel Tunnel - Chartres- Le Harve - Portsmouth - Winchester - M49 - M42 - M6 - M62 - Liverpool - Dublin - Naas - Roscrea - Limmerick - Tralee - Castlemaine

  :( :beerjug:

Funny you should mention that...

For my holiday next week I thought I'd plot a route from Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry to Athenry Co. Galway, result:

1256.4 Miles
1 day 6 hours and 11 minutes!!!

Glenbeigh - Clonmel - Wexford - Rosslare - Fishguard - Haverford West - Carmarthen - Severn Crossing - Swindon - Reading - M25 (Anti-clockwise) - M20 (pop in for a cuppa at home maybe) - Folkestone - Return trip on the Euro Tunnel - Back up the M20 (another cuppa?) - North around M25 - M1 to M6 - M56 - A55 - A5 - A55 - Unclassified road running along A5 - Holyhead - Dublin (but not the shown ferry route!) - Straight across Dublin (crow's fly) - Down the N7 (that's the Cork Road innit?- Naas - Portlaiose - Roscrea - Nenagh - Limerick - Ennis - Gort and ATHENRY!!!

Hmmm I think I'll leave the GPS at home and take the Michelin map!!

Naw... the reason it takes so long is that the Mapsource programmer was Irish, and is stopping at each pub on the way...:beerjug:

Go purist!

a tuffmap and maybe, just maybe, an e-trex for when you get completely lost - anything else is just eroding your innate skills and promoting dependence on the US military/industrial complex and their teutonic lackies!:D :D

SPIII Routeing

Yes, it seems just Ireland... I got one route of 11,000 miles from Limerick to Galway...

Was driving so did not bother to save, should have it would have been very interesting...

Also once got Edinburgh to Liverpool via Belfast.....

It's all to do with what preferences you've set. i.e. if you try to route from Denmark to Sweden with the "avoid highways" & "tolls" checked, it will route you all the way around the Baltic via Latvia etc.. because both the bridges and the ferries are highway or tolls. It's only doing as you comand.
My SP III worked fine in Norway on just the base map which had most of the ferries on it.
It was fascinating to see that our average speed in Norway was in the region of 55~60 mph despite only riding at 60~65 mph. The GPS gave me something to fiddle with on the long tree lined boring roads. I'll always take it with me.
