OK, I ought to know by now, but suddenly I'm not sure where they should go. The filter is the bendy one. The bike is a 1982 R100RS.

There is a large O ring that fits between the the filter and the cover (it looks square in the diagram, but that is probably because it is squashed in position,) the square section neoprene one goes inside that in the cover, I'm pretty sure of that, I mean, where else could they go. Then there is the shim of the same diameter as the large O ring. Is this needed in my case, i.e. with oil cooler and thermostat? If so, then where should it go: position 'A' on the cover side of the O ring or position 'B', on the engine side of the O ring. And what is it for, anyway?

Put the shim in first John,

Then the "O" ring,

The shim is to stop the "O" ring from being pushed in to the filter housing, and allows it to seal on the outer diameter of the housing and the end cover,
cheers Graham

Hi Graham, thanks for that, but do you mean I should put the shim into the housing (i.e. in the crankcase) first, or put it on the cover first, before I put the O ring on?

I might be a little thick here, but I can't think too straight because we're about to set off to Barcelona and it isn't possible to check-in on line for the return journey for some reason. Doing my head in!

I could easily develop a phobia about an oil change on an airhead! the amount of threads I've read about oil filters.

Eliminator: I tell ya, I am developing a phobia about flying, what with ash clouds and now my 'kin printer running out of ink. I wonder if they've sorted any issues about filters they might have had on Airbuses? :eek
