as the thread states "they dont build em like they used to!" :mad:
why is it after spending nearly £7.5k on a new bike its been back in the workshop more times than a harley? cant fault the local dealer tho, always greeted with a smile and the "what now?" look:augie
put 53k on my old translap in 2 years but wondering if the panzer will last that long?
dunno if any one else has had the same luck?

various software up dates ( thought that would be sorted before released)?
new fuel injectors/stepper motors (damaged by software update?)
the usual replace the water pipes on the rad, replace again with "new" pipes and pump housing, now pipes rubbing on the fairing (CHECK YOURS!!)
the side stand bent (and no i wasnt/havent sat on it!)
the computer tells me iv'e got no oil, but the dip stick doesn't lie!:augie
now the paint is coming off the swing arm?
and the tank is rattling as though there's summat loose in it?
oh yeah, nearly forgot, nearly lost the head light doing a lap of the iom tt course, just held on with the last threads of one bolt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT NEXT????:nenau

Sounds bad. Sorry to hear the bad news. Off to check on mine now.

In a way I hope yours might be a POETS machine, hopefully they're not all going to suffer the same problems.

The tank rattles like there's something loose in it, mine does this when the bikes on the centre stand, rock it side to side and you hear it, i thought it was normal, a float or something i dunno.... Is this not normal then?

Christ! 53k in two years, def need a reliable bike then.
aye use it for work (motorcycle instructor ya see)
and general tom foolery at the weekends
dont look good when your instructors bike is always having "moments"
as for the rattle , it didnt do it when i got it and the mechanic was keen to have a look:augie

snap.My headlight mounting bolts fell out,tank breather blocked with corrosion (within months of new)and side stand bent so bike now leans too far over.Checked other nuts and screws and more found to me coming out.

unlike harley's you'll find all the parts to make it go properly are under "warranty" not "accessories" :toungincheek get yor side stand changed haydenvn before she topples over on ya

i'm the same as you boys. every time i think it's sorted and it'll need nothing else, something else gives way. charles hurst have been brilliant, in spite of the fact that i had to end up buying it elsewhere, but still, replaced rocker gasket, rad hose issue x 3, gear selector sensor, fuel pump relay, exhaust kick plate, BMW bash plate cracking, all the bearings gone, paint bubbling, and other stuff i can't remember. honda is clearly the way forward for reliability...but my bike has just so much character! :aidan

The rattle in the tank is the breather closing mechanism... designed to close the breather if the bike goes over ... mine was noisy, replaced under warranty ... and is still noisy...

The last mapping update I had was shite with a capital 'S', (see other thread) but disappointingly ECU updates can't be rolled back. I'm booking into CW for a 'parameter reset' which I think means that they'll plug it into the computer and reset idle speeds and threshholds etc...

Where are the 650s/800s made? China?

Where are the 650s/800s made? China?

There's always an assumption that things made in China are of a lesser quality. I'm not Chinese, I have no chinese connections, affiliations or investments in China but i would wager that they are the best placed nation in the world to make stuff. They will have the latest manufacturing processes that are probably ahead of western Europe so I don't see how made in China would make a difference. Sure there will always be bad apples in the barrel and some third part party manufacturers may produce sub standard parts but I suspect BMW is cost cutting where it can. I mean £7.5k for a bike is pretty cheap for a beemer. In Austria an F800 GS is £14000 because of their environmental taxes. :eek:

Not sure if that's a 'serious' question, or just a troll, but the serious answer is no, not China; the twins are assembled at BMW Berlin/ Spandau, with Rotax engines manufactured in Austria, and some other components sourced from round the world--maybe even China :augie--just like every other manufacturer.

spot on. The chinese will make anything to any standard given to them. Its up to BMW to put the quality procedures in place and have them strictly adhered to.

I work for a chinese govt owned mining machinery manufacturer. We have the biggest machinery in the world and make the biggest machines in the world - all to the best standards in the world. No-one would buy them otherwise.

It was a serious question actually; for some reason I had an idea that either the bikes or the engines were assembled in the Far East - I stand corrected.

BMW is confusing everybody, even their own marketing staff, with new/ transitional model names/ engine designs etc.

Former "F650GS" single, Euro-sourced engine, assembled Berlin;

New "G650GS" single, now Chinese-sourced engine, assembled Berlin; looks very much like old "F650GS" single, not sold in all markets (maybe not UK?);

"...the engine is made in China by Loncin, which also builds the G650 X-Country..."

New "F800GS /F650GS" twin, Rotax engine, assembled Berlin.
