Off to Calgary on holiday for a couple of weeks in September. Anyone got some must-do's while there. Plan on doing some exploring. Quite fancy the train journey to Vancouver. If the weather is ok, might hire a bike.

Ride around that area its great, spend some time round whistler and Vancouver if you can.

If time allows a ride through Rockies taking in Banff and other ski areas is great. Van always features highly in the best places to live charts and with good reason.

I havnt ridden there for a few years but it used to be ace. My fave was a monster trip van, Calgary, Edmonton, med hat and to EKs birthplace Butte, amazing :)

Have a great trip:thumb

"Rocky Mountaineer'' train journey to Vancouver is expensive but well worth it. I've done Jasper to Vancouver, but expect the trip from Calgary to be much the same.

Fantastic scenery and wildlife (saw some wolves running alongside the track at one point) and constant supplies of food and drink :drool.

Yep, I've done Calgary to Vancouver on the Rocky Mountaineer.. It is well worth it, not idea what the set up is now with it (I did it about 5 years ago) but didn't see the point in going for the more expensive ticket.. cheaper ticket gets you a seat, more food than you really should be eating in 2 days, and you don't have to move to get food.. not recommended if you are taking kids with you - they would mostly find it boring..

Icefields parkway is nice to drive along (between Jasper and Banff), also can go up to lake louise.

Waterton glacier park is well worth visiting. It's a 3 to 4 hour journey south of Calgary.

To the East there's dinosaur valley in the Badlands. No mountains but has some incredible canyons carved through the landscape.

Lake Louise and Banff are within a couple of hours drive from Calgary. Anywhere in the Rockies is equally as spectacular.

If you're thinking of driving to Vancouver use highway three which runs parallel to the American border, rather than the main truck route along Highway one.

Oh, and if you're near Glenmore lake in Calgary, pop into Nellies on 90th street :thumb

Be carfeul up around banff and especially jasper mid to late september with a bike... it can be 30degs on day then snowy the next! Just thinking about giving yourself enough time to get back to wherever you may need to if you are stuck in jasper on a bike with snow (which also means ice) on the road.

WIth that said... you'll find lots of places such as tony roma's that do fantastic ribs... a great cheap place for breakfast is called Smitty's... get their blueberry pancakes... yummy.... I'd also rent the bike and head up to Jasper... banff has too many louis vuitton (?) shops, gucci etc etc... Jasper is proper mountains and you'll drive past some amazing scenery, and the parkway icefields on the way.... all about 3 hours from Calgary... maybe 4. I've seen my only black wolf up in Jasper... its also fun to watch the chinese tourists get too close to the elk and get chased around... :D

Oh... just north (about 5 minutes) of banff are the banff springs... great view overlooking the town whilst bathing in hot spring waters... both banff and jasper have some superb golf courses.... let me know if you stray near either fairmont resort, where you will find the courses, and I'll see if I can get you a deal for a few nights... or one...

so... in general... have a good time, take at least one semi warm jacket and trousers... a good pair of sneakers or hiking boots (in case of the snow), eats lots of food and stay away from rutting elk! If you head up to Jasper give me a shout as there is a 'locals' spot where you'll find amazing views of the town and you'll be most likely to find bears most evening. Also... I'd recommend staying at alpine village in jasper... loads of wildlife around the cabins and free wood for the fire if you can chop it yourself! Watch out for chopping those feet!

SO get out of calgary and have fun exploring!
