 Just bought a Zumo of fleabay which I thought was a 550. Got it this morning turned it on and its says Zumo 400!!!!!! very mad!!!!!:forry

Can the 400 be upgraded to the 550 spec?

What are the main differences does not seem to be many looking at the Garmin website except no Blue tooth?

cheers

Andy

Can you send it back? If it was advertised as a 550 but you got sent a 400... it seems like an easy one to fix.

I don't own either but from what I can tell the 550 came installed with better map coverage and a car kit. There were other little bits but from what I can tell nothing to shout about... You can buy the 400 new from halfords for £190 where they have them in stock...

If the Ebay advert described it as a 550 then send it back and start the disputes process off. But if you made a mistake and bought it thinking it was a 550 and it was described as a 400 and sold as such then you will have to put it down to experience.

I should have known better........ they guy did not say which model it was and when I asked he did not reply:blast

But when I sent my paypal payment I did put for payment on Zumo 550!

Spoken to the guy and he said he did not know what model it was...... I have never had a Zumo before but it says when you switch it on.... know one is that stupid?

Cant find them on the Halfords web page....

A lot depends on where you bought it - as to the course of action.........

If it is a dependable re-seller - you should dispute the item.

If you think you have indeed been ripped off, then you can upgrade the UK/Ireland mapping on the 400, to full European mapping for £38 (I think).

You must use a Garmin application called "Mapinstall" to do this, otherwise it will simply update the UK/Ireland maps.

The 400 stores maps on SD card, has no bluetooth facility, and comes with less brackets/mounts than the 550.

Hope you get a satisfactory result.

Al :)

Yeah you won't. Go into or ring your local shop and they can tell you which stores have them available. I know there are two in Truro and one in plymouth... or at least there was last week. As they are old stock they thend to be kept 'out back'... not sure how that sells them if I'm honest!

Now i am very confused!!! The unit is second hand, it has no SD card in it but appears to european maps in it..... it has software 3.30, Audio Version 2.3 and GPS SW version 2.9.

No blue tooth as well...

As I recall ... Zumo 400 was a Halfords exclusive, cut down, no frills version and no bluetooth but did have cradle and mount (RAM-B-178-A) in the box.

It depends how much you paid as to whether you were ripped off. - The Bluetooth option is a waste of time IMO and I never use it as it keeps disconnecting and there are too many issues with sound levels via Autocom. - If you need European Maps, £38 doesn't sound too bad to upgrade if that's right. If you don't need them, then there's no point in having them..

You may just be seeing the European basemap, this is a coarse map with just main roads that aren't necessarily in exactly the correct place. You can navigate using the basemap but not very satisfactorily.

Try zooming in on say Paris and see if you can see all the minor streets, try the same on London. If it lacks detail in Paris but you can see lots for London then you probably have UK mapping, if neither have detail then you have no mapping worth mentioning at all.

thanks for that i have checked and yep has full uk map but base map for Europe

Mmmmm......... I'm not sure about the "stores maps on sd card" now

It sounds like you are going to have no joy with the vendor, so it may be that you have to take this one on the chin.

If you are planning on using in Europe - the £38 for the upgrade might grate a bit, but will be necessary.

is it possible to update maps without the orginal CD or code?

Without those you're going to be stuck for mapping upgrades to future versions, let alone the European upgrade.

Did your eBay purchase just include the GPS and not a lot else, if so sounds like it could possibly be stolen (the fact the vendor seemed to know not a great deal about it sort of supports that theory). Attempting to register with Garmin or obtain a mapping upgrade could, at the least, result in them refusing to deal with you or worse. Each unit is individually identifiable and if reported stolen to Garmin they will know when you try to upgrade. If it came with the box, instructions, USB lead etc then you should be OK, most thefts are from vehicles and these usually stay at home.

You can use Mapsource to extract the unlock code from the GPS itself using the unlock wizard, although as you don't have the disk installing Mapsource will have to be done this way.

Once you've done that, have the GPS hooked up to your PC using a USB to mini USB cable (most of us have these lying around these days as plenty of cameras, phones etc. come with them).

You may need to install the Garmin USB driver at this stage.

Open Mapsource and select 'Utilities' > 'Unlock Maps' from the menu. Click 'next', leave the first option selected. Click 'next' and then select the second option. Click 'next'. This should extract your unlock code to Mapsource.

Fire up the unlock wizard again and choose to view the installed unlock codes, clicking the title of the mapping product and clicking the properties button should show you the code.

Dunno what you'll be able to do with the code if the Zumo is stolen though :nenau

I agree with Bumpkin (post 15) and as it unravels, the vendor does not know the difference or can read the model number off the unit, its missing key accessories (disc, manual, bike mount, bike cradle plus the coloured slip with the code on it (which any decent bloke selling would pass on and if asked, should also inform Garmin of new owner) .. but this does have all the hallmarks :redlight

Getting any update will be difficult more like impossible. If the 'real' owner has already reported to Garmin (and Police) it means you'll be the unsuspecting one.

Its the perils of fleabay which should have a buyer beware warning.

Yep, sounds like a tale of woe to me

Is the seller really that thick, that he doesn't know what it is?

Probably nicked too, judging by the lack of normal accessories originally supplied from new

What I would do:

I would swallow hard and pick up the phone and call Garmin with the serial number of the Zumo. Explain you bought it in good faith but now suspect that it may be a stolen, could they confirm this, or not, with the registered owner. Express your disappointment as you've always wanted one and are now out of pocket etc... Offer to return it via them and chalk it up to experience. If it is stolen and the eBay seller isn't just a one off registration report it to eBay and PayPal, you may be eligible for a refund. Garmin might possibly appreciate your honesty as well and cut you a deal, you never know.

If this is it then it looks like you're protected by PayPal anyway. Could have got a new Zumo 400 for that sort of money but as you say he didn't specify, maybe you should have asked for clarification but it might be worth raising a dispute with eBay over that. Have you tried contacting the seller as he has 100% feedback? Could be legit but you're missing all the important bits, if the bike was stolen surely he'd have the software, USB cable etc... :nenau

hummm

Well spoken to Garmin and its not listed as stolen on their data base.... but someone has removed the serial code that was stuck to the flap at the bottom. I have looked at the zumo users web site not listed their....

Sell wont answer email...... might drop a hint that I think its stolen and see if that wakes him up.....
