think I've been using the wrong oil

To avoid confusion I've just left the oil in the bike that it was supplied with. 34000 miles without a change or a top up.
But at least I know it's the right stuff :thumb

Page 150 in my 2010 manual is about fuel, not oil.

Yes the 2010 1200GS engine is different with respect to the oil recommendation. The 2005 1200GS recommended 10W40 and then they changed it to 20W50 in 2008/9??? and now it has gone back again to 10W40 for 2010!

But the best advice as always is to follow the manual for the expected operating ambient temperature range.

Simples :-)

Err not sure about that, I have the 2010 GSA and Rainbow recommended 20/50 SEMI SYNTHETIC.

I'll just stick with whatever my dealer recommends and then there's no come back if there's a warranty issue with the motor.

Well one can either follow the Manufacturer's recommendation or the Dealer's - personally I would do what the manufacturer says - after all they designed the thing! and if you do what the Instruction Book says then there can be no comeback either!!

From the 2010 Manual one can deduce that 20W50 is not good for lower then 0°C. but 10W40 is AND there is no upper ambient limit to 10W40 specified, BUT this is for Castrol 10W40 GPS, which is probably more stable at higher temperatures than cheapo 10W40.

Simples!

P.S. I suspect that many of the dealers don't read the Manuals either!!!

I ask myself the question;

WWSD?

What Would Steptoe do? :augie

anyone interested in a group buy of WWSD wristbands? :nenau

All proceeds from sales go to a worthy cause..
Me.

Some years ago i bought a 205Lt drum of Duckhams Q 20-50..... the drum has now rusted about 1/2 way down & it's leaking do you think ive lost my deposit on the drum??

BMW recommend Castrol Power 1 Racing 10W-50 for all Boxers and HP2s

Loud and clear enough?

:D

Greg

So there is a contradiction between the new 2010 Manual and the BMW website - so either the website is in error or the latest Manual is - 10W40 Castrol GPS in the Manual and 10W50 fully synth on the website.

So is the Manual wrong or the website?

If you look closely though, the 1200GS in the picture is last years model :D not the 2010, So I think that this leaflet is a bit dated!!!!

P.S. It is a Castrol leaflet NOT a BMW one!!!!

Give them a bell & let us know????

Give them a bell & let us know????

Just out of curiosity - I had a quick look at the Castrol UK website - can't find Power 1 Racing at 10W50 on their site - maybe I pressed a wrong key????

Also I did a quick UK Google search for Castrol Power 1 Racing - no seems to have any stock????

Can someone show me a site that has stock?

Perhaps this stuff doesn't really exist!!!!!!

It does exist - only in 1 litre bottles in BMW dealers at 15 quid a pop ;)

Thanks - I'll pop into my dealer sometime and check it out, after all fully synthetic will be better than that old mineral and semi-synth stuff, my engine will wear less and there will be less friction so I can get maximum power from my lovely new bike - it will feel great leaving all those old duffers behind on their bloated, ancient clunky, 85bhp 1150 granddad bikes:D

So there we have it - no less than 2 recommended oils for the new 2010 boxers, either Castrol GPS 10W40 OR if you want your bike to last longer and go faster then one must be prepared to pay for the super-duper fully-synth stuff!

i knew i should have used fully synth on those two 300k mile r1150 despatch bikes i service. :blast

Well we all learn something everyday - just think if fully-synth was around back in the old days then your bikes might have managed 300k without the 5 rebuilds along the way :D

Errr yes they do!!
If you read the castrol brochure done in conjunction with BMW you'll see that 20/50 is suitable for the 1200 but if the customer requests it they can have "ultimate " protection by using the 10/60.We've had no issues at all using 20/50

Then why isn't it a recommended oil in the latest Manual???? Is this an error do you think?

20W is not mentioned anywhere in the 2010 Manual - 15W is their recommendation for ambient temperatures >= 0°C

There is an inconsistency between the Manual, the dealers and the BMW website - so it is no surprise that people become confused!!

Skywalker works at a top bmw dealers. So his information i expect to be more current than a handbook which has a length of time between writing and printing and then landing on a customers kitchen table.
Plus the bmw tie in with castrol  is fairly new so perhaps they haven't got the final advertising information out to draw all the punters in :D

I'm in.

But a whole series:

WWWD - wil I find petrol on Sundays in France?

WWOD - should I post this risque picture?

WWPD - shall I buy this airhead to add to the 50 in my barn?

So many possiblilities.

it's not unkown for manuals to be less than perfect. Hence the ever changing oil specs for the same engine over the last few years. ;)
