I'm going for a test ride on Sat so will probably be buying a 12. Is there any considerations I should think about regarding a new bike? I'm thinking of base bike with heated grips, and perhaps ABS. I'm not sure about cast or spoked wheels yet. I think spokes look better but are a pita to keep clean. I doubt I'll be doing much off road tbo.

On another note I was looking on Motorrad Centrals web site and second hand 2004/05 bikes are going for £8500 - £8995! OK this is with ABS and heated grips but the base price for a 06 1200 is £8995.

The 2006 model has a number of modifications, which should have ironed out all the teething problems, for all the difference I know where my cash would be going and did go! :thumb

See here for recent mods, both real and perceived...

Cheers for the link Baron, I'm sure I'm making the right decision. Much as I love my 1100 I think the 1200 will be more suited to my needs i.e. longer motorway journeys to work each day. I also feel the 1100's brakes are lacking somewhat, I've always felt this. What sort of mpg are you getting with your 06? I'm only getting about 40 - 45 with the 11.

I see you have a 1200 ADV Baron, and had an 1150. I always fancied the 1150 ADV, what do you reckon are the benefits of the 1200 over the 1150?

John just so you know the numbers I was offered.

I chopped my R1100GS with ABS 49500 miles service history, system panniers, 99 plate for 3500 at motorad central just last week, Russell (the english guy) said that the book price was 3500 for 28000 miles, this I checked through a friend in the trade and it was a accurate price, so I got a good deal on the bike.

I traded up to a 1150 Adventure, (the one at 8.5k  ) but it does come with a full set of ally panniers and nearly 650 quids worth of extra touratech bits, so it maybe a high price but it was offset by the good trade in price I got for my 1100GS.

So you should get a decent price for your 1100GS, if I remember correctly same year lower mileage.

John I loved the 1150, it did what it said on the tin, but.........

I made the mistake of riding the 1200 GS for a day, up until then nothing would convince me. I hated the looks of the 12, but riding it for a day, changed my mind. It felt, twitchy at the front, and less planted than the 1150, but after about 30 miles I realised it was down to the lack of weight, and the sheer, extra power of the engine. It was so flickable, by comparison, it changed direction so quickly... So the end result was, I told the dealer, if only they would put that engine, in an Adv version. Guess what happened next. I still loved my 1150 when I got back onto it tho, but then I saw the pics of the 12ADV, and said, the BMW GOD has listened to my prayers.
So far very, very happy with my decision, but I've had a bit of a mishap since, but can't wait to get it back. It is everything I ever wanted the GS to be. Power wise, handling wise( changes direction very quickly), very planted, brilliant road presence, great on medium to roughish tracks, exceptional tank range, awesome looks(personal opinion), and feels much lighter than the 1150 ADV, but I am 6' 3" and suit a tall machine. I think the fuel is carried lower slung than the old ADV, so that it feels like, the centre of gravity is lower.
To sum up:
1. I bought the 12 Adv because I like to do a lot of mileage in one go, 300-400 miles in one go are the norm.

2. I prefered the look of the 12 ADV over the standard GS

3. I have always felt that the ADV range offered better quality of finish over the standard models, e.g. braided hoses, more extras, more extras as standard.

4. Really there was not much difference in basic costs, i.e. for another £1,000, you got a lot more for your money (Personal opinion).

5. The servicing costs are not any different, and I am likley to hold onto and ADV for much longer, and not to contradict myself, I would only change my ADV for another ADV.....

Hope this helps...

Hmm, I think I might just keep my 1100 if all I get offered is £3500.

We'll see what happens but perhaps I have been a bit hasty in thinking about a 1200. £3500 would get you a decent mountain bike sure, but not a mighty GS 11!!!! :D :D

£3500 for a seven year old bike with 50000 miles on the clock seems a reasonable trade in. You should try trading in a 7 year old Triumph Sprint ST with a similar mileage and see what you get offered, and then compare :D

Oh well, I've done it now :bounce1

Roddy, I was initially offered slightly less as my bike will soon need a new rear tyre, didnt quite have a full service history (did the 36,000 myself before I went to Ireland) and one of my rocker covers needed painting. Then John Dillon stepped in and said this didnt matter and gave me the £3500. :bow

Ive just been pissing about with my fuel consumption and its the same as the others........50ish. I usually "make progress"
I did a check last week and rode a tankful going very steady. never over 4000rpm and getting up the gears quickly and got 56.7

High JohnC, i'm just about to put my 1200 up for sale in case you interested. 54plate red with 13500 miles wire wheels abs panniers givi top box rack, seling for £7650
