Thinking of getting an R65GS

Hello there!

I am thinking of getting myself an R65GS(27hp). I've found one within my pricerange, but the exhaustsystem is rusted completely.

Where do I source a new one? I tried motobins already. I'm fine with it being for the roadgoing R65s.

Later I would like to upgrade it to an R80, so if I can find some silencers that fit both versions that would be sweet.

BTW: Is that a /7 swingarm on a monolever?

You can still get an original exhaust from BMW, they still make them, I bought one from BMW for my R65GS

Is your version the 27hp one? I am afraid it might be too little for me? What speeds can you cruise at on the motorway?

yes, mine is 27hp (post 44). I use it on motorways and it will cruise at 100 - 110 kph. The link I gave is to an American site, you must inquire from your local BMW agent to find your local price.
I do not think this exhaust will fit on the R80 engine, they are different part numbers.

Part no. for collector box and silencer is the same, which is quite nice, should I decide to do an engine upgrade.

Headers are however different. Quite expensive, these BMWs on my MZ a new exhaustsystem is 80 pounds

The R80 barrels are wider because it has a longer stroke than the 65, that is why the header pipes are different.

Is it better to get a Y-piece instead of a collectorbox?

some say

a 'Y' piece makes boxer engines more responsive at higher revs / not a lot at lower revs.
a collector box gives better all round mid range response.

i've a collector box on my R100gs / dont think i'd like a 'Y' piece.

Do you think it would be a comfortable tourer for mainland europe? With a stretch of highway here and there?

I toured the alps this summer, 3300kms, on my MZ which was too small for the highway jaunts, could do 100kph and then it was stressed.
