I got mine in September 2010 and since then its covered nearly 16000 miles and the more I ride the more I like it !

I didn't get it specifically to ride over the winter, which I usually do, but this year it is proving the perfect bike for the 56 mile round trip. In the wet, windy, dark weather in crappy country A road and filtering through Aberdeen its proving to be a fantastic bike.

Its got the heated grips, handlebar muffs, HID dip beam, spots, LEDs front and rear and with the Beowolf exhaust if they miss the lights they will definitely heart the throaty roar as I filter and most drivers to move over just enough for me to get through in town.

But the main thing is the power delivery, in this weather it is just about perfect, I know if I rode the new Crosstourer I'd be going too fast wheras the GS gives me enough and handles the conditions easily.

As long as the snow and ice stay away. I'll be a happy boy !!

Mpg? Got any figures?

I used to reset my computer every time I filled up, then one day I got bored (I do that), and haven't reset since march 2010. I've just been to the garage, and since then I've averaged 57mpg (that surprised me!). I don't commute, or ever get stuck in traffic. I only ride for fun, but usually in the company of 3 police bike instructors on 1200 GS's and an 1198 Duke, so we don't hang about! I honestly don't think there is a better combination of performance and fuel economy out there. The 1200's are averaging 46mpg (on the same rides). I once managed 48mpg after filling up and following a Pan European at speeds rarely below 100mph.

I know I've gone off topic, but economy is the one really outstanding feature of this bike.

....mine has averaged about 62mpg for 11,000 miles, doing low 70s when touring through Germany on backroads. As the man above says, it must be the best combination of fuel consumption and performance out there. Worst tankful I ever did was average of 46mpg, which was after a solid two hours of 6,000rpm (95-ish?) on a French motorway. 80-ish cruising usually gives 55-58mpg.
What a bike...but as I've said before, most of us here already know that!! :augie

MPG

I usually do about 170 miles between fill ups, but its not usually on reserve then so assume about 3 gallons which works out around 60mpg ish on average.

Thats riding on country roads and through commuter traffic so happy with that !

Custom Seat

Hi russ_fae_fyvie

Can I just ask about the seat you have on your bike ?
Looks very nice, is it a standard seat restyled or an after market custom seat ?

I'm the proud owner of a white 2012 F800GS and I have to say its a cracking bike, average mpg is around 62, only thing I can fault it on is the plank like standard seat.

Yeah that original seat is truly awful !

I looked at the BMW Comfort seat (which should be standard!) but far too expensive so I got Tony Archer Seats to do a recover and repad and its much, much better. We have been (2 up) on many long runs and its been great.
Tony will give you a choice of material, if you want coloured piping (like mine) or gel pads, excellent job as well.

I can't remember how much but it was around the £100 mark, you need to send you old seat for him to recover, I bought a scabby one off ebay and sent him that so I could keep my old one. If you give them a bell they will talk you through the options and the costs.

Hi.russ_fae_fyvie.
I know we are harping back to the old screen question, but does that one work. I am 6'2" and have tried various different ones, all to avail. Most just wobble around and cause more problems than the standard. That seat looks good and for a price around what you quoted is value for bums.

Thanks for the close up shot of the seat, I found another thread with a guy who had his done by Tony Archer but his was finished with Yellow piping, both of them look very good, I spoke to Alan, Tonys son today and discussed my needs and my seat is now winging its way to Huddersfield for a make over.
Also nice to hear first hand feedback regarding its comfort level :)

All being well it should be back in a weeks time.

Thanks for your help and advice :beerjug:

Cheers Glenn

11 000 mile since july on mine. really love it and always doing round 60 to the gallon.:thumb2

33,000 on mine, and with heated grips, muffs, heated jacket, extra spots and Heidenau K60's on it is PERFECT for my commute through country lanes and the odd spot of fast A road stuff.

Averaging 66-70 to the gallon, though I rarely exceed 70 on the commute.

As you say, skinny enough to filter, light enough to throw about. What's the 1200 for?

Hi Dave Ett,

I see your using the Heidenau K60 tyres, Im thinking of changing my Scorpion Trails for these shortly, how do you find them ? How well do they wear ?
What are they like on normal roads ?

Many Thanks

Glenn

Although I have moved on the F800GS has set the bar for other bikes to live up to. My main concern is BMW missed out on the 2012 updates, I have yet to see one on the road.
My wife had a test ride on the F700, 0 miles on the clock when we set off.
Four weeks later I also took it out while my bike was seviced and it only had 550miles on the clock of which 150 miles were ours.
Although both bikes are very good they offer no incentive to move up to.
My wife is sticking with her F650, I'm sticking with the R1200GS.

I'm just over 6ft and I don't get any buffetting on my bonce, on long straight roads the wind seems to just clip the top of my helmet but other than that its fine. No nodding donkeys when I ride, thats with the deflector at its highest setting.

Russ,

Wos you out on yer machine today in Moray?

A Tango bike like yours, sporting a noisy Beauwulf can, went past the car as I was heading for Forres about 2pm1

Just being nosey :D

This was the first day I haven't been able to use the bike due to Black Ice so maybe someone borrowed my steed without telling me !!
