Recently upgraded from 2Mb to 8Mb and from a speedtouch modem to a Voyager router. Everything works ok apart from the fact I've suddenly got a poxy download speed, 94kbps when it should be around 1500kbps. Line tests ok connections are good and apart from this the router is working correctly. The only thing I've done is fitted new RAM, which is obviously working, and a new video card. This has since been removed.

any suggestions?

At the moment I've got two choices,

go back to the modem, which means uninstalling the router and reinstalling the modem software

or heave the bloody thing through the window, favourite

Try all variations on resetting the router.....power off, 30 secs, power on....try it out.

power on, diconnect cable, reboot, power on, reconnect (that refreshes the IP addy)..try it out.....

power all off and reboot, power on...try them all in different orders......

I don't know why it works but it does,

have a read of this;
http://www.uk.clara.net/bsupport/voyager.php

and type in 'voyager speed problem' etc into google...there are loads of forums and info that might help ;)

Good luck :thumb

If you've only just switched to ADSLmax, there's a 10 day (or so) 'training period' whilst the line is monitored to find the highest stable speed. This means that your connection speed will be highly varaible during that period, probably more noticeably during the peak periods. Give it a coupla weeks and if things haven't stabilised complain to your ISP.

You oughtn't to need to uninstall the router software to go back to a modem, just reset the Internet options > connections to 'always dial ' for the modem :)

P.S. Shame about the Voyager choice though ! :monkeypiz

sounds like a fairly common MAX DSL problem. have a hunt round the forums here

Thanks for the replies. Just connected my modem and it's like a different machine. Unfortunately it keeps dropping the connection every few minutes. I'll try the software reinstall tomoorw. Can't be arsed tonight.

What are you downloading? If you are downloading stuff that requires a direct connection to other computers e.g. using a peer to peer client like Sharezaa, then you will need to set up port forwarding on your new router.

A router is a very good firewall and will block most attempts by others to connect to your machine. So, it is sometimes necessary to alter the router settings.

Most software that requires port forwarding will have instructions in a FAQ or forum on the web. Just enter the brand of the router and the software with bad download speed into google. E.g. http://forums.shareaza.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=18 for Shareaza

I first noticed it when I was trying to download a driver for my now unfitted video card. My test was then a sample game from the yahoo games site. With the router it was going to take 20 mins for 11.7 Mb, with the modem 2 mins.
