When I bought myself my '08 1200 back in April I justified paying for it by saying that, rather than bringing it to Joe Duffy to be serviced, repaired etc I'd save some cash and do all that kinda thing myself. The only problem with this is, I don't really know how. I've stripped down my wife's vespa, resprayed it and reassembled it but I don't fancy stripping anything off my my bike in case I screw something up... The vespa cost 300 quid, mine was a bit more. So I had a thought that maybe somebody out there would let me sit in and watch/help them doing a service/ rebuild/ anything else useful so I can learn the ropes. Just putting it out there as I know there are a lot of experienced people out there. Obviously there'd be a couple of pints in it for them!:aidan

Niall, there's not a lot involved in servicing the 1200, is she due a service, what milage is on her now. I've sent you a pm with my number.

Cheers,

Brian

Bike has 13000 on it so far. Got it's very first and only service at 5000 so think the next one is due in another 2000. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks Brian. Was not looking for someone to service mine, maybe help them service theirs so I know how to do mine! Cheers. Have the cornflake box ready.. It was the kellogg's ones, yeah?

If you were able to reassemble a Vespa (and make it work!) then a GS should hold little fear for you. Get yoursel a manual, or look up all sorts of How To tips on this very site.

I didn't go near the engine on it tho. Stripped it down enough to respray it with rattle cans and then reassembled it. Took front end off and all trimmings and wheels. Was kind like a giant mechano set putting it back together.. Even had the usual left-over screw that belongs to nowhere!

Cracker , or Crackers ? ,

The first question i usually get asked when selling a BMW bike is
""Does it have a Dealer service History ""
As has already been said , its no biggie , there is no rocket science involved
But , you have spent a considerable amount of money on a Brand and an
image , that almost dictates the Machine is dealer serviced..
I reckon it will cost you £200GBP per time on an average.
Wouldnt you just Save the money through time and have it done and stamped by the dealer ? ..

I bought this bike with a view to driving it till it won't drive no more.. Hoping it won't need to be replaced for a long long time. As regards the brand and image, I'm not that fussy. Bought it because I like it to drive. Finally, as a teacher, my time is not very valuable at the moment and if I'm not in school, which, let's be honest, is most of the time :hide , then I might as well be doing something that'll save me a few quid. But do appreciate the input.

hear hear :clap :beerjug:
It's a bike not an investment.
There easy to service - if you're in Tralee I'll take you through it.

I'll vouch for Gerry C he adjusted my headlight in the dark, in fog and wasn't even sober at the time:blast:aidan

That sounds like an excuse to drive to Tralee!

You need no excuse to go to Kerry other than it will not come up to you. Now that Sam is gone there is a little more room. If you are about I'll give you a few pointers fog or no fog. ;)

well worth getting a quote from the lads in duffys for the service, bearing in mind that there is more to a service than just changing the oil.
checking diagnostics, balancing throttles, recall screening, software updates.
or book in for a free healthcheck ( i think they are running a promotion ) :thumb

A big thanks to Brian for dropping over yesterday morning to guide methrough the service. Changed the air and oil filters, gearbox and engine oil and she's running smoother than ever. Lovely. Great satisfaction from doing it yourself even if I did have te worst hangover of my life doing it. Hopefully my pickled brain retained all the info! Took it for a spin around Wicklow way/glendalough area this morning. Great weather for it. Loadsa bikes out. Cheers again Brian and everyone else who gave me advice.
